Kinsley Harper sat at her desk with her eyes closed. She blew out a breath and leaned back in her chair. She had just finished a job for a client and she was glad that one was over. She always hated to follow and find evidence of a spouse cheating cases but they usually paid well. This one certainly had. She was going to be able to catch up bills and still have a nice cushion. Kinsley was contemplating taking a week or two off when her phone rang.
"Harper Detective Agency, this is Kinsely speaking, how may I help you?" She answered with a cheerful voice.
"I'd like to hire you to find my daughter," a man's voice answered her. She could tell he was distressed.
"Ok, I would be happy to help in anyway I can. How old is your daughter?"
"Her name is Emerson Gainsley and she is 16 years old.. The cops aren't doing anything."
"I'm sure the police are doing what they can. How long has she been missing?"
"Almost 2 months now."
"Did she run away or do you suspect something else?"
"The police keep saying she just ran away and will turn up but her mother and I don't agree with them. She wouldn't run away."
"I understand it is difficult for parents sometimes but the police must have a reason…"
"It's not difficult to understand! What's difficult to understand is the police not caring!" the man yelled at her.
"It's ok, Mr. Gainsely. I'm sorry I didn't get your first name."
"Robert. You can call me Rob. The police have made no progress since we reported it. Will you take the job and look into it for us? My wife Candice and I would greatly appreciate it. We feel so helpless and the police…"
"I know you feel that they aren't doing anything but…."
"Please," Rob Gainsely pleaded into the phone. "Please help my family. We are so worried about our Emmie."
"Okay, okay, okay." Kinsely replied and squeezed her eyes shut. She had a bad feeling about this but decided to give it a shot. She took a deep breath and then continued. "I"ll take the case. Is there a good time for you to meet with me, preferably at your house. I'll need access to her room, her things. Does she have a computer? A phone? I'll need a list of friends, people she is close to."
"Yes, yes, yes, we can meet today. You can have full access to everything. Her computer, phone, her room, I'll have Candice write up a list of friends and contacts for you. When can you meet with us?"
She finished the call setting up a time to meet with them around dinner time so everyone would be home. She got the address and checked the clock. She still had a few hours so she packed up her things and headed for home.
She slipped into the front door quietly and headed to the kitchen. She grabbed a pop from the fridge and took a swig, then popped into the living room. Her sister was sitting in the recliner with her feet up watching the television.
"How are the boys doing?" Kinsley asked her sister. Karianne jumped slightly and then glared at Kinsley.
"Crap, Kins, don't do that to me," she said with a chuckle. "Damn near gave me a heart attack."
"You're too young for a heart attack," Kinsley said with a smile.
"Logan is in his room. The day went...ok. He had some issues at school but nothing too major. I didn't have to pick him up," she said with a shrug. Kinsely heaved a sigh.
"Not home yet. Mom is getting him from therapy in about 10 minutes," Karianne said looking at the clock. Kinsley looked at the clock as well and nodded. It was a little earlier than she had thought.
Kinsley headed down the hallway towards her older son's bedroom and put a smile on her face. She knocked lightly on his door and waited. His voice carried out to her asking what she wanted and she opened the door and stepped inside.
"Just to see how you were doing," she said to his back. His head turned and a smile come on his lips.
"Mom!" her 7 year old son Logan yelled as he sprung up from the chair and crashed into her with a giant hug. "I missed you."
"I know, Bug. I missed you too today. What happened at school?" She replied warmly. He pulled back from the hug and gave her a sheepish smile and tucked his head back into the hug.
"I don't know. I don't remember."
"Aunt Kari said there was an issue, Bug. What happened?"
"Sorry, Momma. Garrett said some things and I...I hit him." he said getting agitated. She sighed.
"Ok. Calm down. You aren't in trouble, Bug."
"Momma, I'm sorry. I don't mean to get in trouble. "
"I know, Bug"
"Are you home for the night?"
"No sorry I have to go back to work in a bit. Finish your homework."
Kinsley pulled herself away from her son and headed back to the living room. She checked the time and grabbed something to eat. Her sister looked over at her.
"You done for the day?"
"No. I just picked up a new case. I got to take off here in a few minutes.
"Might want to head out before Luke gets here then. He may not take to well to you leaving as soon as he gets home." Karianne replied with a shrug. Kinsley nodded slowly taking a deep breath.
"Yeah. I was thinking that too. This may take a bit tonight."
"What is it?"
"Missing 16 year old girl. Police seem to think runaway. Parents adamant she didn't and something is wrong."
"How long she been missing?"
"2 months. I really hope the police are right." Kinsley replied and checked the time. "I should get moving."
