A Room Lends Itself

I enjoy sitting at a table, or sequestered in a nook .A room opens up before me to host a crowed of patrons or co-workers. Voices, cars, birds present a back drop which falls away the more involved I become in my task. Yet, if my attention slips I can easily glance up to people watch or recharge with a glimpse of the outdoors.

In in climate weather, I find it soothing to make a cup of tea, curl up on the couch, and devote an hour or two to writing. In this case a radio or cued up episode of my favorite show provides a back drop to help focus my thoughts. Having energy around me drives my imagination, and the louder a space is the easier I focus.

"I tell my students one of the most important things they need to know is when they are at their best, creatively. They need to ask themselves, What does the ideal room look like? Is there music? Is there silence? Is there chaos outside or serenity outside? What do I need in order to release my imagination?"

—Toni Morrison, The Paris Review, 1993
