~~Eden's Serpent~~

You know
you cannot trust me,
because you know
I cannot care;
and you know you can't
rely on me,
because you know
I'm never there.
I can see in your eyes
the suspicsion
that I'll lead you far
astray--
but I can tell your heart
beats harder
every word I softly
say.
You tell me that it's
not too late
to change my
wicked ways;
I smile and say
'of course it's not',
and kiss your words away.
You'd like to be
my angel,
to absolve me of
my sins. . .
But it's so easy to
drag you down,
when that's all I am
within.
And I know what you
are thinking;
and I know it drives you
mad--
how you want to find
a way to reach
the heart you think
I ever had.

Yes the Serpent
spoke to Eve this way,
he kissed her sweet
and smiled--
and love is blind and
beautiful,
like angels in denial.
You gladly give your heart
to me,
and wrap it in
your soul--
and down it falls
like ash again,
what Eden's Serpent
stole.

You know
you shouldn't touch me,
because you know
I'll make you bleed;
and you know you're
not safe near me,
because you know that's
what I need.
I can feel your soul
is trembling
when I whisper on
your skin--
and I can tell you're
trying to hard to force
that pure young mind
from sin.
You plead that I
turn down my night
and walk the
brighter ways;
I tell you that I'll
think it through,
and kiss your tears away.
You'd love for me
to never kill,
and be the saint
you think you see. . .
and it's so simple
to pull you in,
when you have such
faith in me.
And I know what you
are feeling,
and I cannot help
but grin--
that the love you think
can purify
would become your
deepest sin.

Because the Serpent
spoke to Eve this way,
he kissed her sweet
and smiled--
and love's still blind and
beautiful,
like angels in denial.
You gladly give your heart
to me,
and wrap it in
your soul--
and down it falls
like tears again,
what Eden's Serpent
stole.

The greatest enemy. . .
is the one who knows you.
And your deepest fear. . .
should be the one who holds you.

Because the Serpent
spoke to Eve like so,
like I kissed you sweet
and smiled--
and you're so blind and
beautiful,
an angel in denial.
You gladly give your heart
to me,
and wrap it in
your soul--
and down you fall
like Eve again,
what Eden's Serpent
stole.
