Chapter 2: Breathe in, Breathe Out
"They WHAT?!" I exclaimed.
Jake nodded, grinning happily, "They did."
"Wha? How?" I was grabbing at my hair desperately. How could they?
"It was so shocking!" Jake was telling me. "I just came out slowly, waiting for the blow. But they took it well, saying that they could pay for the band or whatever we need."
"What- These our your parents? Don and Alice?" I asked.
He nodded proudly.
I shook my head, disbelievingly, "I don't believe it," I said.
Jake frowned, "Why not? I mean, yeah, they're strict, but they wouldn't be THAT harsh would they?"
"They didn't even say ANYTHING?!" I asked, pleadingly.
Jake shook his head, looking confused. "I thought you were happy for me," he said.
"I AM!" I exclaimed.
"Okay!" He said, holding up hiw hands, "Take it easy! If it makes you feel any better, they were a little disappointed."
"They were?" I asked eagerly.
"You sound a little too happy about it- Being my best friend and all," Jake said, folding his arms.
"I am? Well, then I guess you're not hearing right," I said, trying to surpress the hysteric attack that I felt was about to blow. "Your parents should cut you some slack," I said, unconvincingly.
"Are you okay?" Jake asked.
"Fine," I said quickly, taking a seat on my bed in my dorm room.
Jake sat across from me on my roommate's bed.
My leg was shaking. I put my hand on my knee to steady it. But the other one started shaking. I put my other hand on it.
"This can't be possible," I whispered.
"Huh?" Jake asked, tearing his eyes off the tv set he had turned on.
"Nothing," I said quickly. Breathe in through your nose, I told myslef. Out through the motuh. Aw! Damn it! Why wasn't it working? I put my head between my knees, gasping soft breaths so that Jake wouldn't notice. But he did.
He turned, "What's wrong?" He asked.
I didn't answer.
He stood above me, and tapped my head, "Hey... Are you okay?"
"Great," I said, taking a deep bvreath, keeping my head between my legs.
"Well, you don't sound great- Is there a big test or something?" He asked.
Typical Jake- Moron that he is. Why are guys so DENSE?!
"No," I murmured.
"Then would you sit up? You're scaring me."
I didn't answer.
"Helloooo," he said, playing my head like a drum. He got on the floor, lying on his back on the ground so that he could see my face. My TEAR-STAINED face. Oh great, just great.
"Hey! Why are you crying?" He asked.
"I am?" I asked, wiping them away hastily. "No I'm not," I said glaring down at him.
He laughed, "Yeah you are." Then he said the same thing he did when my date to the junior prom stood me up, and he had found me outside crying. "Come on, Misty Lizzie- Tell me what happened."
I shook my head, "We're not 16," I told him.
"So?" He asked, putting his hands behind his head. "We're still best friends, right?"
I smiled, "Right."
"So why won't you tell me?" He asked.
"Because I- It's nothing," I muttered, sitting up.
Jake stood up, "Tell me tell me tell me."
"No no no," I replied, standing up.
"Yes yes yes," He said.
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"YES!"
"No."
"Uh-huh."
"Yes- I mean, NO!" I shouted. I glared at Jake who was laughing.
"Ha!" He said. "Yes."
I took a step forward to tackle him, but I tripped, pulling him down.
Now Jake was laughing so hard, tears were forming in his eyes. He pounded his fist onto the ground. laughing uncontrollably.
"You idiot! You tied my shoelaces together!" I exclaimed.
Snorted laughter was his reply.
