"You're the sort of person," she said,
"Who knows what they want."
"You're the sort of person," she said,
"Who can dream with hope."
"You're the sort of person," she said,
"Who can win at love when others can't."
"You're the sort of person," she said,
"Who helps those at the end of their rope."
You're beautiful and talented,"
"Funny and smart."
"and you can recover,"
"When someone breaks your heart."
"Now, you're not the innocent,"
"And you're not the rebel."
"You're not always good."
"And not always in trouble."
"You will win this game of life,"
"Because you're the sort of person who's strong that way."
"You are so many things,"
"I cannot even say."
"You're the sort of person," she said,
"Who can be held in the arms of the one she loves,"
"And be fully satisfied,"
"For the span of five years."
"You're the sort of person," she said,
"Who can hold anyone,"
"Anywhere,"
"And help them dry their tears."
As my eyes filled up with tears,
I looked at her and smiled.
"But all my faults only I know,"
"I've known myself a while."
With the slightest anger she rose her hand,
To cut off my flow of words,
And said, "Stop. Close your lips,"
"Listen to what I've been saying,"
"Please, haven't you heard?"
"Yes, but then again," I said,
And she stopped me with that look.
"Just believe all that I have said,"
"Considering the time to tell, it took."
There was a moment of silence,
And then a smile.
And together,
We'd gone yet,
Another mile.
What I learned was this:
(And it hit me like a kiss)
I know what I want,
I dream with hope.
I win at love,
And hold the rope.
I'm beautiful and talented.
I'm funny and I'm smart.
And, yes, I can recover,
When someone breaks my heart.
I'm not the innocent,
Yet not the rebel.
(Where'd she get that?
I'm both a little.)
I can win at life,
Because I'm strong enough.
I can get on through,
When times are tough.
I can hold anyone,
And let them cry.
I can be held,
And be content to sigh.
I have lots of faults,
And lots of downfalls –
This I know is true.
But what I have just learned is:
I have good qualities too.
