Different This Year

Christmas is about

Long car rides, Christmas songs reverberating on every

radio station...but not this year.

About

Presents and songs, carolers singing...but not this year.

About

Family and friends, finally together...but not this year.

About

Grandma and Grandpa, and cousins who

you haven't seen in ages...but not this year.

About

Winter-break homework, impressing the

relatives..but not this year.

About

Laughter and comfort...but not this year.

About

Being stuffed to the gills with fatty, sugary foods that'll

probably make you keel over dead (if you can wait until

the end of the holidays!)..but not this year.

About

Contentment and smiles..but not this year.

About

Laughing while watching the classic, profoundly BAD

Christmas cartoons (Charlie Brown, How the Grinch Stole

Christmas) ...but not this year.

About

"Awww, really.you shouldn't have"..but not this year.

About

Decorating the tree, lighting the candles, praying together

before going to bed..but not this year.

About

Believing in Santa, if just for a day..but not this year.

About

Staying up late, curled next to Grandma, as the timeless,

lulling sound of "T'was the night before Christmas"

floats through the house..but not this year.

About

Childish delight as you see the ocean of presents sprawled

across the living room floor..but not this year.

About

Reclining, pleasantly stuffed in front of the TV, laughing at

the irony of the commercials that beg and plead with you to

"show some holiday spirit...buy our product!"...but not this year.

This year, it's about Mom, and Medical, and Emergency room.

About Doctors, and Hospitals, and Nervous Family Waiting For News.

About Worry, and Fear, and Pain...a Pandora's Box, an emotional

cornucopia just in time for the holidays.

Merry Christmas.
