Jane's 20th Anniversary

By Slick

Jane rolled over sleepily and pulled the patchwork quilt closer about her. In all of her 45 years Jane Rose Callwell had never been an early bird. But things were different today, somehow. Jane just couldn't place her finger on it. Wait, there was no warmth by her side, Ben wasn't beside her. And another thing, she smelled coffee, and eggs, and bacon... Jane forced her eyes to open, and she slid out of bed. She pulled on some pants and a sweatshirt and padded into the living room of the old-fashioned log cabin. Ben was sitting at the kitchen table right off of the large living room. He smiled at her as he put down the morning paper. He winked and said, "Happy anniversary." Ben nodded toward a plate of delicious smelling food. Jane gave her husband a secret smile as she sat down and leaned across the table to receive the kiss that he offered. "I've nothing to offer to the love of my life but this." So saying, Jane pulled out an add from her pocket which advertised a plain but shiny blue car. "You don't need to give those wistful glances anymore." Ben smiled and squeezed her hand. "It looks like we both have gotten what we had wished for, of course I'm not saying that I really expected you to do this, but I was sure getting tired of riding around in that old Volkswagen for the last 10 years." Jane laughed and and kissed him, storing the memory of her 20th anniversary away in her heart.
