A Poem About Olives (II)

(The Veteran Studies An Olive)

We all sough to imagine hardened
Candy, but the yielding
Aqueous mixture, Something
Almost chemical, One spread it
Upon a poppy-seeded cracker.
The Others,
Prodding a taste not
Sweet not bitter…
Interestingly enough,
I cannot
Describe the taste of Olives
When expecting
Sugar it makes even
Less of a difference.
The man who had
Seen war studied one, in shaky fingers
Calloused by experience thru' hills
And family names.
Perhaps he realized that
He did not know which
Words an olive tasted like
As well.
