The Skit by the Desperate Writer
The Skit by the Desperate Writer

(NAOMI sits CS, notepad in lap, with a puzzled expression on her face. She is not writing.)

(JUDY enters SR.)

JUDY
Hey, Naomi. Whatcha doing?

NAOMI
I'm trying to write a skit.

JUDY
Oh. What for?

NAOMI
Gospel Choir. Not that they'll use it.

JUDY
Why not?

NAOMI
Read this. (hands JUDY the notepad)

JUDY
(reads) Bob . . . John.

NAOMI (frustrated)
Yes! That's all I've written.

JUDY
Two names?

NAOMI
A character list.

JUDY
Do you know what happens to them?

NAOMI
No.

JUDY
No?

NAOMI
I've got writer's block.

JUDY
No ideas?

NAOMI
No . . . plenty of ideas. But none of them are good enough.

JUDY
Whoa, hang on a second. I thought that brainstorming was all about treating dumb ideas like they'd actually work.

NAOMI
I don't have time to brainstorm.

JUDY
Well, then. Hope Bob and what's-his-name get a plot soon. (exits SR)

NAOMI
Thanks a lot.

(TASHA enters SL.)

TASHA
Hey, Naomi. What's up?

NAOMI
(looks up) Um . . . the ceiling?

TASHA
No, silly. God is up. That's what I always say.

NAOMI
Oh. I don't suppose He could help me with this skit.

TASHA
Sure. I mean, I guess. If He wanted to . . .

NAOMI
Good. Because this skit has to be good enough for them to choose to perform. I mean, I've already submitted several skits, and none of them have worked.

TASHA
Why do they have to perform your skit? I mean, don't other people have a chance?

NAOMI
You don't get it, do you? Finding skits is the one thing I have done well since I've been in choir. If I don't find one this time, well, I'll feel . . . useless.

TASHA
Join the club.

NAOMI
What do you mean, you feel useless? You're a soloist, for crying out loud!

TASHA
But that doesn't mean there aren't days when I feel that the choir would be just the same without me.

NAOMI
But . . . it wouldn't!

TASHA
And it wouldn't be the same without you, either. You see, it's not about how big of a role we play, it's that we're giving our time and effort to God, and with His help, none of what we do is useless. Even if I didn't sing a solo. Even if you didn't write a script.

NAOMI
You mean, even if all I do is stand up there and sing with the rest of the choir, God can still use me?

TASHA
Absolutely.

NAOMI
Thanks. That means a lot to me.

TASHA
Don't thank me. Thank God.

Curtain.
