the forbidden
When the sullen clouds go to sleep,
And the drops, like liquid crystal,
Merge with the ocean's deep
And silent greenblue waters,
Then out the forbidden creep,
Out from their hiding and their pain,
Into the light again,
And the air.
When the shining light is dimmed,
And the beauty of sunset gone,
And the world is silver-rimmed
With the fine grey mist of dusk,
When the drowsy fishes swim,
The forbidden can be heard to sing,
Sad the music rings
On the ear.
Forbidden to glimpse morning's light,
And left forever mourning there,
Condemned to the eternal night,
Within the earth encircling,
For years, and not of sun a sight!
With tears among the treeroots curled,
Dead inside a living world,
And alone.
When the sullen clouds go to sleep,
And the drops, like liquid crystal,
Merge with the ocean's deep
And silent greenblue waters,
Then out the forbidden creep,
Out from their hiding and their pain,
Into the light again,
And the air.
When the shining light is dimmed,
And the beauty of sunset gone,
And the world is silver-rimmed
With the fine grey mist of dusk,
When the drowsy fishes swim,
The forbidden can be heard to sing,
Sad the music rings
On the ear.
Forbidden to glimpse morning's light,
And left forever mourning there,
Condemned to the eternal night,
Within the earth encircling,
For years, and not of sun a sight!
With tears among the treeroots curled,
Dead inside a living world,
And alone.
