Fractured Illusion

This topic is for discussions about cinema and television.

The discussion can be about a specific movie, TV series, directors, animes, etc or a general chat. Several discussions may go on at once, we have no rules of order for that. This is meant to be a relaxed place. However, our monthly Movie Night does come with rules we hope aren't too hard to swallow.

Nominations: 1st - 4th

Poll: 5th - 8th

Actual movie night: 2nd Saturday every month, unless majority wants otherwise.

Once a month an official movie night will be decided with a movie voted on through an open poll. This movie night will take place the second Saturday every month - unless otherwise has been decided. You are only allowed one movie nomination per person and two votes in the poll. The nominations will start the first of the month and the poll will start the fifth.

The movie night will start at a specified hour but people are free to watch the movie before or after the specified time. The specified time is for those that wish to discuss the movie with other RGers while viewing. Usually, Movie Nights start at 5PM.

To nominate a movie for Movie Night you must include these below:

Link to a trailer: (link to the trailer on youtube first hand, assuming it is available there, otherwise try to find a trailer from another site)

Summary: (rather on the brief side)

Streaming link: (include at least one available good streaming of the movie. No download links. If you repeatedly provide them, we may ban you) The movie must also be rentable.

Optional, but helpful to include:

IMDB link:

Reason why: (to watch this specific movie)

There are no restrictions regarding rating.

Official Movie Nights usually take place on Skype (which can be downloaded, free, from their webpage). There is a special discussion room set up for RG movie nights. To get to it, you must get Skype first. Check out the link below.

To access the discussion room, take contact (via Skype) with rg_sheriff. Make sure to tell her you're from RG and want to see the movie. Then she'll add you and you can join the rest in watching the movie! Should she not respond you can always post in this thread asking for access from someone else. If you have any other Skype related problems associated with Movie Night, make a post here as well.

Get Skype -

Yes, of course. If there is a movie you want to see during any part of the month, you can come here and ask the others if they too would be interested in watching. When to watch and where to watch is also up to you to decide.

Waiting for next month.

We go by FP time zone (GMT -8, US Pacific Time Zone).

So we can't really do anything with this till august then?

7/11/2010 #4
Fractured Illusion

No, movie nights are flexible.

We can still have a movie night if you guys want. If so:

Nominations: 11th - 14th

Poll: 15th - 18th

Movie night: whenever you guys want it after that?

18th is a Sunday btw.

7/11/2010 #5

I'll nominate something then. Maybe something we all haven't seen?

Before I do, guidelines to what we can and can't nominate?

7/11/2010 #6
Fractured Illusion

You can nominate any movie, rating doesn't matter (not yet anyway unless you pepsies wanna make a sug about it). But its best to nominate something you think most would enjoy.

7/11/2010 #7

I nominate The Prestige (2007)

Please read the rules if you want to participate.

To nominate a movie for movie night the minimum requirements are that you specify title, genre, link to a youtube trailer and give a brief summary and at least one available link to a good streaming of the movie. The movie must also be rentable.

yes please! (thanks for organizing, Frac.)

Movie night: whenever you guys want it after that?

the following Saturday (24th; Sunday for Aussies)?

To nominate a movie for movie night the minimum requirements are that you specify title, genre, link to a youtube trailer and give a brief summary and at least one available link to a good streaming of the movie. The movie must also be rentable.I think I read the rules absent mindedly, because I know for fact I've read all of the posts in this thread.

Anyways, okie dokies *cracks fingers*

Trailer here

The story follows Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, rival stage magicians in London at the beginning of the 20th century. Obsessed with creating the best stage illusion, they engage in competitive one-upmanship with tragic results.

Genre is best defined as mystery/thriller/suspense

You can only link to youtube and hulu. If its any other site you have to copy-paste.

7/11/2010 #13

Can we only make the one nomination? I can't decide which one to put forward :\

Can we only make the one nomination?

I can't decide which one to put forward :\

Tough luck

Remember there will be more movie nights. It's not an once in a lifetime opportunity. You can take the other movie for next time.

My nomination:

Title: Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Genre: Comedy / Drama / Romance / Soccer

Trailer link: Here

IMDB link:

Summary: The film follows two 18 year olds with their hearts set on a future in professional soccer. Heart-stopping talent doesn't seem to be enough when your parents want you to hang up your football boots, find a nice boyfriend and learn to cook the perfect chapatti.

Streaming: X

Reason why: This film has so much - comedy, growing up, culture crash (India vs UK), friendship (between the two female characters mainly), puppy love, following your heart vs family expectations, overbearing family, soccer (if you're into that) etc. I've enjoyed watching it in the past and am seriously due for a rewatch. So why not have it with RG? :p

Potential warning: it has Kiera Knightley? Haha I dunno. If I remember correctly this movie is pretty family friendly.

7/12/2010 . Edited 2/21/2011 #16

Aw, I'll give it a go, XD

Title: Brothers Bloom (2008)

Rating: PG-13

Genre: Comedy / Adventure

Trailer link: Here

IMDB link:

Summary: It's about two brothers who are con men, and about the last con they perform together. It's got some great humor in it, while also some really great seriousness with a hint of romance. They travel the world, Russia, Germany, New Jersey, Mexico, Prague, and then some.

It should be available to rent--maybe even Redbox. Plus, there's always the piratebay or isohunt option for those in the US.

Reason why: One of the best films I've seen recently and as cheesy as it sounds, recent OT reminded me of everyone being from different parts of the world. Plus, it has the character Bang Bang in it. And countless literary references to classic literature ;)

Potential warning: There is suggestive sexual content, but it doesn't show anything. In fact--XD, there's a straight out reference to the scandalous ending of James Joyce's Ulysses, so it's about as pornographic as "Oh yes!" XD

7/12/2010 . Edited 7/12/2010 #17

Thank you Potter and Frac - you just took off two strong contenders from my list :D

Right, that leaves...

Title: It Happened One Night

Rating: U/G

Genre: Screwball Comedy

Trailer: The youtube ones are crap, so here:

IMDB link:

Summary: A spoilt heiress marries a man her father doesn't approve of, and after being forcibly separated, she runs away. With the media in uproar over her disappearance, she travels across America to find her husband. Also travelling in the same direction is a smart-alec journalist, who quickly works out that she doesn't belong, and offers to help her, and not alert the authorities, provided that she gives him exclusive rights to the story behind the scandal of her marriage. Things go wrong, and hilarity ensues.

Reason Why: I watched this for one of my film courses several years ago, and it was absolutely wonderful. It was one of Hollywood's accidental success stories, and really has a sparkle to it.

Potential Warning: Um...none. Big show of leg, at one point? It was considered a tad risque at the time, mainly because Clark Gable didn't wear an undershirt...

Brothers Bloom has won!

We will watch the movie this upcoming Saturday!

Any suggestions of what hour to start the collective watching?

7/19/2010 #22

Oh cool! Alright, so I just preformed an experiment in the Skype OT with Sheriff, and I do have a copy of the movie on my computer, so I attempted to file share it with her and it did start downloading. But it said it would take like, an hour. So if anyone is unable to find a copy who wants it, we could set open a private chat with me on Skype for the purpose of downloading my copy to use. We could just leave the chat open for as long as it needs and see if it'll work, XD. I'm not 100% of course, but all assumptions would say it does.

Pertaining to actual on-subject topics though, I do not mind what hour we start collectively watching :)

7/19/2010 #23

I'll look for a stream copy, and then I'll host on ustream if you guys dont want to download.

Hour: Mid day, or near? 3 o' clock, central maybe?

I'm gonna watch Bend it Like Beckham today, and Ima use this thread as the recipent of my reactions. I don't know many reactions I will be having, but just in case I will flood the thread, now would be a good time to unsubscribe...
