A large tent had been erected outside the walls of the city, the pennants of Anrien flying beside those of the Haelean Empire. General Natkim stood behind the seated figure of his king, the fourth Majesty of Anrien, Jimil. Jimil was young, only thirty or so, and far more interested in wine and women than matters of state. The following meeting with the Haelean delegation would be disastrous, Natkim knew. The king was becoming impatient, the Haeleans had been expected over an hour ago. 'What do you know of this Rothen?' the king asked his general.

'Only that you must be wary when you speak with him, he is not to be trusted.'

'B***,' Jimil snarled, 'I'll run him through!'

'I wouldn't recommend it, my liege,' the general replied dryly, sighing inwardly - Anrien was doomed, soon it would become just another province of the ever expanding empire. After resisting for hundreds of years, it was over.

They waited.

Moments later the banners of the Haelean Empire crested the hill.

Rothen rode upon a dark horse,himself-dressed in black.

The official was escorted by a dozen of the finest Haelean house guard. Each armed with a long pike, the flags of the Haelean attached to their weapons so they fluttered in the breeze. Though this was merely for show. Rothen knew that if their hosts wished-they would all be killed. All be it they would risk war.

Therefore Rothen rode stright-backed on his saddle, keeping his head high. He was well versed in what needed to be achieved to make an impression. From the impressive display of quality arms to arriving late, not bowing to the timeline of a foreign power.

Rothen drew his horse to a hault, letting it rear into the air before landing down near where his hosts were gathered. He enjoyed the dramatic arrival.

Natkim rolled his eyes at the Haeleans antics but nothing about the current situation was even mildly amusing. The general knew that the most dangerous enemy was an arrogant one.

'Welcome, my Lord,' the king welcomed the diplomat, 'Come in and have some wine.'

Natkim checked that the blade hidden up his sleeve was accessible, he had a feeling he would need it.

Rothen inclined his head respectfully. "Thank you lord."

He dismounted swiftly, striding purposefully towards the tent.

His guards stood obediently at his horse, their black plate armour looking menacing. They had been dressed so for that effect and Rothen secretly hoped they would unnerve his hosts guards who he considered inferior in both quality and training.

Natkim assessed teh Haelean troops with an expert eye. They were well trained and well armed, superior to the Anrish troops but most of these men were mercenaries, fighting for money rather than their homes or families but the Anrish would fight like those with everything to loose when it came down to a battle, which Natkim had no doubt that it would.

As was customary, the Haeleans opened the discussions, after all, it was they who had raised the flag of truce but if the young king really believed that the Haeleans were offering a truce he was sorely disillusioned.

Rothen took a seat opposite, not waiting for any gesture from the king to do so.

"We come to offer a truce" he said smoothly. "The Haelean Empire respects your kingdom as a sovereign state. We do not wish to encroach upon this. To avoid total war we must end our differences. All we ask is a regular tribute of gold, and selected wares as well as an oath from you,the king, to obey the will of the Empire. In essence you will become a vasal of the Empire. A protectorate of the Haelean Empire"

Rothen smiled, and calmly spread his hands out, offering a gesture of peace. "You will be a respected member of the Empire's family, achieved without bloodshed"

Generla Natkim tried to keep his emotions in check but he knew he would rather die than see Anrien become a vassal state of the Empire. At least they would allow the King to stay in control, at least in name.

'And what do I gain from this deal?' asked the King suspiciously to the great relief of his general.

"Power,respect...wealth" Rothen raised an eyebrow to tempt the king.

"You will rule your kingdom as rightful ruler second only to the Empire"

General Natkim could see the king was tempted. Bending down he wispered something in his ear. theking looked up irritably but followed his general's advice.

'I have that already,' relpied the king, 'Besides, what is to say that you will keep your word?'

"It is true you possess these things great King but know this-with the Empire you will be richer than ever before. You will have unrivaled power to extend even beyond your lands, advising our own leader with your wise counsel. You will be respected across all the lands."

Rothen took a sip of his wine and leaned closer,to speak more to the King than have the interference of his General.

Rothen played with the King's seemingly naive, greedy nature.

"Great King you are but eternal shall your legacy endure with the Empire."

He placed his gloved hand over his heart and closed his fist.

"Our word is Iron,Lord" he assured the King. "The Empire knows only truth and to ensure the divine right of Kings such as yourself. There is strength in unity wise King, and by joining our Empire there will be no end to your power and justice, dictated to across the lands"

The king's eyes glistened with greed as he listened to the Haelean's offer.

'Bring the pact, Natkim.' commanded the king.

'I would advise against it, my leige,' the general replied humbly.

'I am the king!!' he shouted angrily, 'and I say, bring me the pact!'

Natkim bowed at retreated to the back of the tent where a treaty lay already wriiten up and ready to sign in a low table. He fetched ink and a pen and brought these things to where the king and his guest sat. 'My lord,' he handed them to the king and, with a hateful glare directed at Rothen, he left the tent. After all, he hadn't suggested the meeting be held outside the city walls for the scenery.

Rothen had to suppress a triumphant smile. Now that the General was gone,Rothen was confident the treaty would be signed. With this treaty the Empire would effectively contol most of the lands power and in time, will absorb it entirely into the Empire. Empire troops will replace those of Anrien. The country would be occupied and brought to its knees.

"You are most wise" Rothen bowed deeply. "I will sign after your grace has signed himself. Then peace will be known throughout the lands."

General Natkim ran as quickly as he could to the barracks which lay just inside the city walls.

'Get up!!' he shouted irritably, 'Get up NOW!!

Soldiers scrambled to their feet, throwing on chain mail and strapping on sowrd belts. Squires and stable boys ran too and fro, saddling the knights horses.

One solider made the mistake of complianing and he recieved a solid thwack in the head for his trouble. After that no one else bothered to dissent.

'Hurry up, you yellow livered cowards!' and without waiting to see if his men were following Natkim lept up on the horse which had been brought to him and galloped back out of the city, to the tent. About 50 men followed and he waited at the gate until they were all through before yelling to the gate guards to close it and bolt it shut and not to open it for anything, not even the king.

The general and his men approached the tent in a V shape five men thick.

"Sign here my lord and power and prestige is yours forever." Rothen said with a smile. He was unaware of the approaching Anrish troops.

Rothen sat seemingly quite patient though inside he urged the fool who would hand power to his people to sign the treaty. With the treaty Rothen himself would recieve unrivaled fame and wealth, hailed a man of shrewd intelligence and vision.

Rothen tapped the chair's armrest in anticipation.

sign he thought.Watching the king. If he would only sign the Empire would soon rule all of Anrien.

sign...

The king dipped the pen in the ink, placed on the page and signed his name in flowing letters. He held a candle over the paper as he slowly dripped the wax. Then he turned over his hand and deeply pressed his signet ring into the hot wax. Then the king of no country, ledaer of no people, unkowing exile smiled.

'There.'

It was at that moment that Natkim and his men burst through the tent flaps. The general stood, frozen and mortified. If he had been thinking clearly he would have wondered why the Haelean troops hadn't prevented him entering but an enemy that trapped itself eliminated half the work.

"I hope you are not here to defy your king?" Rothen smirked. "The agreement has been signed. Your reservations on this historic, just treaty are irrelevant."

Rothen signed his name also,quickly.

He bowed to the king. "I will take my leave now great King. You have secured peace and prosperity for you and your people"

General Natkim stood frozen in shock as Rothen swept past him.

'This is not over, Rothen,' he snarled at the pompous Haelean, 'This is just the beginning.'

(Where to now? i was thinking a rebels camp but we'd need more characters. If you know of anyone who might be interested mention this to them :) Otherwise, I have no problem against one person having more than one character.)

((Yeah sure we could, if you want of course, have a civil war. Those who are loyal to the King and subservient to the Empire or those who wish to keep independence- those who are rallied by people like General Natkim. That would be cut-throat drama ;)

As for characters I migh be able to get people to join. Maybe my brother might. In the meantime we could create new characters. Just not so many that it would get out of hand. Maybe one or two more for now. What you think?))

((Grand. So we could make a rebel camp thread for those loyal to Natkim and the Castle thread could serve for those loyal to the King.))
