Armistead looked over at Hoke, almost as covered in mud as the men. He nodded to show that he understand and raised his sword. "Come with me!" He shouted.

-----

Ave didn't want to pull away. Never in his life had he felt this way about anyone else, and it was a feeling he wanted to treasure for the rest of his life. "I love you Sarah..." He said softly.

She looked at him, looked deep into his eyes. Sarah smiled slightly, nodded. "I love you too, Ave." Leaning in, she kissed him again.

Reginald nodded, took a shaky breath. "Thanks." She managed, taking a deep breath through clenched teeth.

General Mahone moved his men forward, slowly. He was in reserve, was not in the heat of the battle, but the enviroment was still causing many problems. The men were moving slowly, the mud slowing them down. He called out to his officers, "Keep the men in line! Keep your strengh, boys!" He looked forward at where the forts were, wondering if they could take and hold that position. The Yankees are gone.... for now.

Despite the pain in his side, Ave was happy, and he kissed her back.

Curtis nodded. "Of course, Reginald."

Shutting her eyes tightly, she slumped against him, shaking. She could feel the razor sharp pieces within her, slicing, cutting relentlessly and tearing her apart from the inside out...

Just Before Dawn

Confederate

Private Rose Dillon opened her eyes to the sound of the bugle call, blinking when she could see that dawn hadn't yet broken over the trees. She grabbed her kepi and pulled it down low over her eyes like she always did to hide her facial features as much as possible and stumbled from the tent, shaking the lingering feeling of sleep from her eyes and limbs. Even though she didn't know yet what was going on, she had a feeling it was going to be a long day.

Not too far away, she could see one of the lieutenants of the company, Ted Ayers grabbing a quick breakfast mostly of hardtack with his close friend, Private Samuel Knight.

--

In his own regimental campsite, Colonel Avery Mulligan was also just waking up, grabbing a quick cup of coffee and shoving some hardtack in his pocket before going to talk to some of the other officers in his regiment.

Union

Sergeant George Nelson had not gotten much sleep the night before, had been awake thinking. He stood, holding a cup of coffee in his hands, thinking. It seemed amazing how the day before they'd been marching out in the beautiful sunlight, enjoying the small pieces of nature around them. Now they were in a dark wilderness, overgrown with brush that made it hard to see too far in front of them.

He watched the other members of the 20th Maine get up, the two Poole brothers, emerging together from their tent, close as they always were, Colonel Chamberlain stepping from his own tent. How many of them weren't going to ever leave this wilderness? Would soon be rotting in the ground like Luther was back in their old campground.

--

General John Buford mounted his horse, having already eaten a quick breakfast. He looked out at his men, silently watching as he lit his pipe and put it in his mouth.

Gideon spurred his mare forward, bringing the animal to pace back and forth in the somewhat darkness that hung over the ground. His hands tightened on the reins, and she reacted to this, slapped her black tail across her hindquarters, stepping in place and lowering her head, playing at the bit and turning her ears backwards. Gideon set a hand on her neck, his dark brows lowering, then continued his mounted pacing...

Ben, Jake and Burl were all checking their rifles and accoutrements. They'd been issued three days' worth of rations and rounds of ammunition yesterday. Ben glanced at the others, his face drawn and serious. "Don't anybody lose their heads in there, you hear me? Keep a steady hand." Jake nodded, knowing that his father's words could be taken both literally and figuratively and swallowed hard.

---

Mollie Bean spat into the dying embers, pulling on her battered brogans and shouldering her haversack as she stood.

Union

Grant sat on Cincinnati's back, the dark brown gelding snorting as the soldiers moved in the camps around them. A journalist and a sketch artist also sat among the group of officers, their pencils out and ready, young eyes wide in anticipation.

---

Eoin O'Connell, standing from the campfire, fingered the rosary around his neck, crossed himself quickly. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen...

---

Richard Jordan pulled on his bucktail forage cap, briefly blowing the fur out of his eyes, and allowing a half smile to cross his face before sobering. He took a breath, looked around camp before moving towards where the other NCOs were gathered.

---

Young Jacob Morell gripped his drumsticks tightly, until his knuckles were white. His face was pale; so a battle was coming, was it?

Moxley Sorrel approached the small group, looked at Jake and Ben and Burl and smiled, faintly and perfunctorily. These men could be killed... "Good luck, gentlemen." he said after a moment, moving his hands on the reins as if to reassure himself. The stress of being an aide had easily multiplied tenfold.

Rose looked towards Ben, Burl and Jake, shakily made her way over to them. She would have been a fool if she said she wasn't nervous, because she was terrified of the idea of going to battle, although she tried to hide it, didn't want them to think of her as a coward.

Union

General George Meade mounted his house and rode to where Grant was, reining in beside the commanding general. John Rawlins was also beside him and he nodded to them in greeting.

Ben stood, adjusting his cartridge box sling on his shoulder, nodding to Rose. "Good luck out there, Pvt."

Grant nodded in greeting as well. "General Meade," he smiled briefly. Beyond them, a soldier began to whistle something; an older veteran quickly hushed him. Grant tilted his head for a moment, not recognizing the tune.

"Thank you, sir," Rose said, looking down at the rifle she held in her hands. She'd only fired it for real that one time when Ben had drilled her after she'd first joined the army. How long ago that felt now as they gathered together before the dawn. Would all of them make it back when the battle was over? Would she even survive, or Micheal?

Union

Meade remained silent, however, Rawlins smiled faintly, recognizing the tone the soldier had been humming. "That was Stand up for Uncle Sam," He remarked.

"Rich." Gideon stopped his mare, watching the other for a long moment. "Don't get yourself killed." he was entirely serious in this, didn't want to lose any of those that often surrounded him--although his clear favoritism was evident now more than ever, even insulting to the soldiers of other regiments that he had seen.

Ben nodded, moving away. "Form up, men!" he called, repeating the officers' calls. "Columns of fours!"

Grant frowned briefly, trying to recognize the tune. He shook his head. "I know only two songs. One's 'Yankee Doodle'..." Grant paused, his mouth quirking as he remembered Pickett carrying on at the Point.... 'Benny Havens'... He chuckled. "....The other isn't."

Michael Judge stood next to Rose, glanced over at her every so often, nervous as physically possible. He'd only seen battle once himself, hadn't exactly done well in his own mind. Not only that, but one of the last people who he truly cared about was killed. Now..... having Rose there..... He shook a bit, hoping that this fear would be gone sooner rather then later.

---

General William Mahone glanced over his men, tried his best to picture the battlefield that was before them, if you wanted to call that a battlefield. Was really nothing more then a forest, trees that would get in the way, cause more problems then it was worth. But this was where the enemy was, where they needed to strike, and he could not argue with that.

---

Jeb Stuart sat high on his horse, glancing around, thinking. Calvary could only do so much in a battle like this, but Stuart wasn't going to let that stop him. He'd let Lee down at Gettysburg, had literally failed at his job. Now he was going to do his absolute best to destroy any enemy in the area.

----

Union

Daniel Owens, under General Buford, stood, watching the general, wondering what was going to happen in the near future. He'd never seen battle, was suddenly scared. Months ago there was nothing he could wait for more, now fear shot through his blood.

---

General Sedgewick stood at a table in his tent, glancing at the map of the region. So much woods, so many trees, a terrible place for a battle. Unless, of course, you were trying to surprise an enemy, which made this an interesting battlefield. If General Grant, who had Sedgewick's upmost confidence, had this field in mind, this was where they'd fight.

Hearing the order to line up, Rose gripped her rifle tighter with one hand, reached out for a moment to touch Micheal's shoulder. For all either of them knew, it could be one of the last moments they would have with each other, and she blinked a few times, trying not to think about what the outcome could be.

--

Colonel Oliver Bryson rode towards Stuart, moving carefully with one hands on the reins of his horse, the other holding a cup of coffee which he held out towards Stuart. "Good morning, sir, I brought this for you."

Union

Buford silently smoked his pipe, the men striking the tents and preparing to move out. Orders would come soon, he was sure of it.

--

Rawlins nodded. "The soldiers have many of songs they like to sing."

Still Meade remained silent.

Grant nodded, flicking the ash from his cigar before bringing it back to his lips. He turned Cincinnati, clicking his tongue and motioning for the rest of the officers to follow him.

Rienzi squealed, lifting his nose; Sheridan soothed him, leaning forward briefly in the stirrups. He glanced at Buford. "The boys ready, John?"

Michael reached over, took his hand and brushed it across her hand, trying to comfort her. There was nothing he wanted more then to be right here beside her, but he truly wished that they weren't there, weren't on a battlefield.

Stuart glanced over at Oliver, sighed, wished that the boy would just go away. However, coffee sounded good right about now. Reaching out, he took the cup. "Thank you, Oliver."

Rose smiled faintly at him as they stepped into the line, standing side by side in the ranks near Burl and Jake. She was trying to think of something other then the place she was, the battle they were about to fight. But it was all she could think about no matter how she tried to change her train of thought.

--

"Yes, sir." Oliver smiled faintly, glanced nervously around. He wasn't nervous for his own safety, far from it. No, he was worried about Stuart's safety. "Sir, please stay safe during that battle. We can't win the war without you, General Stuart, sir."

Union

Buford saluted Sheridan, nodded. "They're falling in now, sir."

Meade and Rawlins followed Grant.

There was nothing else to do, everyone was feeling the nervousness that came before the battle. There was nothing else to do, nothing anyone could do, the feelings were filling the air, everyone was breathing it. Michael didn't want to be here, especially since Rose was there, but he was there and there was nothing to do about it.

Stuart sighed, tried desperately not to hurt the officer. "Oliver.... worry about yourself, please."

Rose didn't even know want to think if she was thinking of the battle. What would it really be like? She could see horrible pictures from her imagination and what she had heard. Now she would see for herself what battle was like.

--

"I am not important, sir," Oliver said, shaking his head. "You're the one who's going to save the world by winning the war for us, sir. It's you I have to protect."

Buford watched Sheridan, continued smoking his pipe as his men fell into line. He didn't say anything, would wait for Sheridan to give him the orders.

Meade and Rawlins stopped beside Grant.

The order to march had come, Neil fell into line after giving Raven the order to stay there, away from anywhere the dog would be in danger. Raven watched as Neil marched away with the other men, his brown eyes reflecting a sad look at being left behind.

Ben glanced at the two from over his shoulder briefly before facing forward again. It hadn't been hard to figure out what was going on after "Jackson Dillon" had arrived. Ben wasn't blind. He mentally shook his head, hoping the girl wouldn't freeze up in the fight coming. That's the last thing we need; another soldier dead.

Samuel Hodgson leaned forward in the stirrups, his pencil sketching rapidly, his eyes tracing the path of the men ahead, getting every detail possible. The horse shifted its feet and he nearly fell off, quickly adjusting his posture and clutching his sketchpad tightly. Grant sent a smile the boy's way, saw the eagerness in his face.

Ted marched beside his friend, both of them silent. It was his first battle as well, and he was determined to prove himself worthy of his rank, no matter how terrified he was.

--

"But sir..." Oliver hated when Stuart got mad at him, looked down at the reins he was holding. "I'm sorry sir, I'm just worried about you."

Union

Neil wasn't sure when he was going to see the enemy, the sun was only just raising, early morning beams casting among the undergrowth and trees. He watched the men in front of him, the two Poole brothers. And they had another brother who was a doctor somewhere behind the lines. Neil tried to remember their names, had never really talked to any of them, but he couldn't remember. It wasn't a very big deal, he just felt that he should try and remember the names of all the men around him, in case they didn't make it back. He might not even make it back. But then he would see Luther again.

He shook his head. He couldn't think like that. He had to make it back, what would Raven do if something happened to him? Still, there was that chance that hung over him whenever he went into battle.

Rose didn't say anything else as they marched, thinking only about putting one foot in front of the other. She tried not to think about anything but each step, could feel her heart pounding in her chest.

She heard a gunshot and she jumped slightly, peering ahead to see who was there.

--

Oliver took the cup. "Yes, sir. I'll be back."

He turned and rode off to bring the cup back and get his men into line. But he vowed that he would not leave Stuart for long during the battle. He had to protect him.

Union

Neil wasn't sure exactly where they were going. In fact, he wasn't sure where most of the division was except for the men around him. But he knew what he was supposed to do, and he could march until he had to fight.

It wasn't easy to walk through this place. All around them were scrubby thickets and tangled undergrowth. But he could hear a few gunshots. The skirmishers Griffin had positioned here where not far from them, even if they couldn't see them yet.

He had lost sight of where the road was a little while ago but then they reached the skirmish line and passed them. Only then did he see the Confederates in front of them. And then they started firing.

"Into line of battle!" the cry echoed down the line and the men shifted into two lines, their rifles held in front of them. "Ready! Aim! Fire!" A volley went off, smoke filling the air as the cracks of the shots echoed.
