Anna Milfords sat in a chair by the fire, mending a dress.

Evan Milfords ran to the window and looked out, his eyes widening. "Mama! It's snowing! It's snowing, Mama!"

Looking up from the dress, Anna smiled. "Is that so?" She glanced towards the window and saw the snow as well, swirling down onto the ground.

Evan grinned widely. "Can we go out and play in it, Mama? Please?" he begged, looking at her.

"Maybe later," Anna replied, "It's cold outside."

Evan's face fell slightly as he looked back outside.

Bringing his horse over the ridge, Hancock ducked his head against the bitter wind that swirled snow off the ground. He chanced a look up at the house, orange light spreading across the glass surface of the snow. This would surely prove interesting.

Evan squinted against the glass pane, pressing his nose onto it. Then his eyes widened again, seeing Hancock. "Mama!" he gasped. "There's a man out there!"

Anna stood up and moved to the window, setting the dress down on the chair as she looked out through the snow. Also seeing Hancock, she moved towards the door and opened it a crack, looking outside.

Evan ran up behind her, peeking around her skirts to see the man. His eyes widened as he noticed Hancock's uniform, covered in snow but still recognizable for what it stood for.

The youngest of the children, Jenny ran up to them and Anna knelt and scooped the child into her arms, peering out at Hancock through the snow, curious as to what he wanted.

Approaching the front steps, Hancock dismounted easily but refrained from stepping into the family's territory. He removed his hat, though the snow continued to fall, covering his great coat. "Ma'am," He nodded politely, keeping his voice quiet. This was always the worst part.

"In the name of the Union, we requisition the use of a portion of your home until one important individual is well enough to withstand these conditions." He gestured to the ground around him, it was freezing.

She stared at him in surprise for a moment, Jenny resting her head on Anna's shoulder as she looked at the stranger, sticking one thumb in her mouth. "You need my house?"

Evan's eyes widened even further, if that was possible, as he stared up at the Union general, a mix of excitement and fear racing through him. They were taking the house?? Where would he and his family go?

The general nodded seriously, "We can not move the man very far, his condition is serious." Hancock glanced in the direction he'd come from. "You are the closest dwelling."

Anna thought about it for a moment, didn't really think she had a choice in the matter, even though she was not very happy about it. "Will we still be able to stay in the house?"

Evan clutched his mother's skirts tightly. He suddenly didn't want to go out in the snow like he had thought.

Boasting Jenny up slightly in her arms, Anna nodded. "Alright...I'll prepare a room." She didn't like the idea, doubted she ever would but it was only one room and she planned to have as little to do with it as at all possible.

Evan yanked at his mother's skirts. "But, Mama! He's a Yankee! Papa wouldn't want him in the house!"

"Sh, Evan," she said softly, turned to look at the boy and gently placing Jenny down. "You and you're sister go on inside. I don't want you catching a cold."

Hancock paused in his thanks, understood that the subject in all entirety was very touchy. He remained where he was, replacing the slouch hat as he watched the scene at the door.

Evan gave a distrustful look at Hancock before taking Jenny's hand and pulling her away. "Come on, Jenny, let's go...."

Jenny stared back at Hancock before following her brother into the house. Looking back up at Hancock, Anna said quickly, "Well, what are you waiting for? If the man's condition is as bad as you say he needs to get warm." For the moment, she tried to think of them as just men, not Yankees, although it was hard for her, she just didn't show it like the children.

He nodded, ignoring the tone she used. It wasn't the first time he'd heard it, and wouldn't be the last. Mounting the horse he tipped his hat politely. "Thank you Ma'am." Without another word he turned the horse quickly and rode back towards the Union quarters. The horse moving a little more quickly than what he should have been in those conditions.

Watching him go for a moment, Anna turned and shut the door, going into a small room on the first floor that was rather bare. No one in the family used it, so it was empty except for a small table, a lamp and a bed. She threw some blankets on the bed and started a fire in the fireplace then turned and when back to the chair she'd been it before, sitting down with a sigh. They just had to pick her house!!

Evan looked at his mother seriously. "Why did you let him take over the house?" he asked angrily. "Papa wouldn't have let Yankees in!" He barely remembered his father, but he was utterly certain of this, if nothing else.

The eldest son appeared through the back door, arms full of wood, catching the last of what his brother had said, "Who's let Yankees in?"

Anna looked up at Dan. "The Yankees are going to use a room of the house," she said stiffly, "One of them isn't in any condition to face the cold weather."

Dan's face showed obvious disapproval as he threw the wood next to the fireplace, turning to his mother in anger. "Then it would be one less Yank to worry about!"
