Name: Balund (Mk. II)

Type: Planet

Physical Description: Balund is a planet entirely covered with the trash of a long-forgotten spacefaring civilization. It was not their homeworld, and was instead more like their dumping ground. As such it is barely habitable except by the hardiest creatures, but its atmosphere is breatheable, though it is toxic after prolonged exposure. The garbage that covers the entire planet's surface can be useful if you can find what you want, and so a few nearby spacefarers make a living finding interesting things and selling them. Be warned, however, that much of the waste found here is radioactive and so some sort of protection is required.

Climate: Generally colder than Earth, but still habitable; however, its surface is constantly ravaged by harmful acid rain. And acid floods. And acid oceans.

Who Lives There?: The planet has no native life-forms. But such an abundance of resources means that a large variety of creatures make their home here, usually descended from things that were jettisoned with the trash. These creatures are all incredibly resilient due to their hostile home, and as such are very hard to kill. Extreme caution is recommended. Traders from various spacefaring civilizations can also sometimes be found here, scrounging for salvageable garbage.

Location: Near the ancient center of the Milky Way, but not quite in the center. It revolves around a red giant star.

A small spacecraft passed into the atmosphere of Balund.

Said craft sputtered in protest at the descent through the putrid air; its pilot slapped the instrument panel.

"Come on, Soli old girl, you've been through worse than this." The Pilot said. The ship sputtered again, as if in response.

The Sparrow flew over the eerie reddish landscape. Kivo had never seen so much trash, but there were bound to be spare parts and maybe upgrades for the ship. Finding a clear space, he set down and donned a breath mask. Lowering the ramp, he left the Sparrow and began searching around for anything of use.

The first craft flew lower, sputtering over his head just six feet above; close enough for a very sizable gust of wind to hit him.

It slowed down and touched down gently on the ground a moment later. It was then that black writing in some unknown language became visible on its side.

EDIT: Ignore this.

Kivo picked up a sturdy piece of piping and looked up as the Soli set down nearby. He only knew his own species alphabet, so the name of the vessel was unknown to him. He kept a hand near his blaster and waited to see who or what would come out. He hoped they were friendly and not something that ate little rodents like him.

A moment later a hatch on the side of the craft hissed open. A small cloud of black smoke wafted out, following which a small, repltilian creature emerged. Said creature was around a foot long, not including its tail. It looked around curiously, then stood p on its back legs and held something small to its mouth; said thing was emitting faint wisps of black smoke. She (for it was quite clearly female) cracked her neck and stretched out the pair of bat-like wings protruding from her back.

About then she noticed Kivo. She said something in an unintelligible language.

Kivo smiled and replied, "My name is Kivo." What Etherik would hear was "Ta benben oxx Kivo." He studied the strange being before him with great curiosity.

A nearby pile of junk moved, producing a clanking noise as pieces of metal slid off it. A muffled growl issued from within the pile.

(Hint: It's not Aal.)

She blinked, then nodded. "Right, then, nice to meet you." She replied in his language. She then noted the moving junk pile, made a "shush" gesture to Kivo, and pulled a small, silver handgun from her belt.

(( Yeah, for simplicity's sake I'm saying she speaks his; since she knows a bunch of languages it's feasible. ))

8/1/2010 #10

((Fine with me))

Kivo pulled out his blaster pistol and shushed. Again he hoped whatever was growling didn't have a taste for little rodents like himself.

8/1/2010 #11

The growling continued, but grew gradually softer as the shifting of the garbage increased. Eventually the growling was no longer audible at all.

Then, something large and hairy suddenly burst out of the pile, sending garbage flying. The thing darted at the two of them, massive claws slashing.

Etherik jumped back, propelling herself an extra six feet through the air with a beat of her wings. "Getunder cover!" She shouted at Kivo, firing a number of blue energy bursts from the gun.

(Note: I use "energy bursts" because I don't know how else to describe it. ))

8/1/2010 #13

((Energy pulse perhaps?))

Kivo dove into a large pipe and pointed his blaster towards the entrance. If that monster came in here, a blaster bolt would be the last thing it would see.

8/1/2010 #14

(It's probably something like superheated air or whatever. That's what most of my characters' "energy" weapons shoot.)

The creature was hit by Etherik's shots, but did not seem to notice. It did however notice Kivo diving for cover, and it leapt at the pipe in which he was hiding, smashing into it and sending it rolling across the field of trash. Straight at the Sparrow, of course.

8/1/2010 #15

((Steam hurts like hell when it hits you. A gun that shoots focused jets of steam is pretty original.))

The pipe struck one of the forward landing legs, nearly snapping it in two. The ship fell over onto the old pipe and slowly began to crush it. Kivo himself had been knocked quite unconscious.

Etherik growled, blasted another few bursts at it, then took to the air, flying towards the downed ship and pipe.

8/1/2010 #17

Kivo awakened for a moment and tried and failed to get back up. He didn't feel anything broken, but there wasn't a spot on him that didn't ache.

8/1/2010 #18

The creature spun around toward Etherik, slashing at her now that Kivo was out of commission. It ignored her shots; they barely tickled it and anyway it was in a hungry frenzy, and so was unaware of anything but its potential meal.

8/1/2010 #19

regaining his strength, Kivo pulled his sword from the sheath on his back and crawled out of the pipe just before the Sparrow crushed it. He closed his eyes a moment and wished Tor to give him courage from wherever he was now. Taking a running start, Kivo leapt onto the monster's back and stabbed his sword between the shoulder blades.

Etherik growled again, taking potshots whenever she could, aiming for any potential weaknesses; the eyes, into its mouth, and the like.

8/1/2010 #21

"Toss a grenade in his mouth!" Kivo thought, "If you can't destroy something on the outside, destroy it from within!" He pulled out his sword and stabbed it into the back of the creature's head. The skull withstood the blow, but it left a nasty cut.

Thunder Lord Aeatos

(( I think we should probably wait for Cel to post instead of attacking it anymore. ))

8/1/2010 #23

8/1/2010 #24

(Attacking it with a melee weapon was a dumb move.)

(Also, I never explained the physiology of the monster. Who says it even has a head?)

The creature ostensibly ignored Kivo, instead continuing to leap after Etherik and swat at her. However, the creature's "hair" then began to move on its own, starting to twist around both Kivo and his sword.

Thunder Lord Aeatos

Etherik cursed in four languages, shot at it one more time, then dove for new cover. "This isn't working...." She muttered to herself.

8/2/2010 #26

((Sorry. I just guessed. My bad. Kivo leaping onto the monster was simply a bout of reckless bravery, a trait of his late friend Torpole.))

Kivo struggled to free himself as the hair began coiling around his limbs. He angled his wrist and tried sawing through the hairs, but to no avail. Kivo watched Etheril dive out of sight and hoped she hadn't ditched him.

8/2/2010 #27

(There's not much I can do to respond, just assume it kept doing what it had been.)

8/2/2010 #28

Kivo continued to struggle against the mobile hairs, but the effort was draining his strength, and to make matters worse he was battered and bruised from tumbling inside the pipe.

8/2/2010 #29
Thunder Lord Aeatos

Etherik took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself enough to work up a plan.

After a moment, she stood up, shot at its eyes a couple of times, then bolted for her ship.
