Bane immediately radioed one of the other soldiers. "Kitsune, possible sniper."

One member of the fire team, the sniper, unlimbered her weapon after the transmission. The other soldiers followed suit.

"Well, I guess we would be watched, standing in a clear street and all." Bane took a step back to the trees--

--And ducked at the loud, ear-splitting crack of a railgun, a weapon he knew all too well. The two-inch thick, six-inch long bolt of metal screamed past them and punched through an unfortunate mailbox a foot or two away from them, burying itself halfway into the brick wall of a building.

"Contact!" Bane shouted, scrambling for the cover of a nearby minivan. He saw the smoking hole in the mailbox and reconsidered.

He moved to an alley as another shot tore into the vehicle behind him and went through completely.

Andrea had missed twice. The first was when he suddenly moved, the second when he made a wise choice.

Bane, the man that worked with the Lone Wolves, was hard to kill, mainly due to luck. He was wearing his signature balaclava, with the image of a fireball on it. The girl had stood a little to the side, out of the way of the first shot. Andrea ignored her and focused on the rest, reminiscing in the process.

Their first round in Iraq had been different. So was the second in Florida, and the third, Washington, D.C. Now he was here, and he was sluggish. If he wasn't trying to live, he was trying to kill Andrea. Trying poorly.

A bullet hissed a warning in her ear as it passed by and kissed a building behind her. Sniper, it said to her.

She turned to the trees and spotted the source: A sniper aiming in her direction. He/she had to be good to track the shots that fast, and better still to be able to accurately guess.

Andrea returned fire; the shot tore into the tree the sniper used as cover, and punched a hole in him/her as well. Finally, a hit.

The fire team's SAW carrier opened fire, forcing Andrea to take cover.

"Kitsune's been hit!" One of the soldiers shouted.

Bane spoke into his radio quickly. "We need air support. Two choppers and a medi-vac, bring everything."

He called out to the woman.

"I need your help," He said bluntly. "Can you keep that woman in this area, until the backup arrives?" He referred to their opponent, who he knew was Andrea Kovic, the ex-sentinel turned mercenary.

Her voice called out. "Bane! How many is that now? Eight? Nine of your teammates so far?"

Bane did not respond.

"Whoever it was is dead, right?" Andrea spoke with a serious tone.

Bane changed the subject. "Kovic, this time you won't get away."

"Wasn't that what you said last time?" A full second passed. "Before I killed half of your old squad?"

Bane's teammates looked at each other for a moment, in confusion.

"You never told them, did you? Thought they'd wet themselves or something?"

Danté looked over at the two that had just approached and imediately tensed up. Hunter or prey? He couldn't tell, and he really didn't want to find out. "Hunter or prey?"

Alyssa looked at the man that spoke. He didn't look like a hunter. It was likely safe to tell the truth.

"Prey," she said. "Well-armed prey. You?"

2/8/2011 . Edited by Fleur-de-lis Evans, 2/23/2011 #213

They were prey too, thank goodness. Danté relaxed a lot more after she spoke. "Prey as well. Are hunters following you? We're trying to avoid them..."

2/8/2011 #214

"I think just one. But we cut whoever it was off." Alyssa safetied her weapon. "Where were you going?"

Alixa immidiately pulled her gun when she saw the others, but sheathed it again when they announced being prey.

"Southside," She replied, "Less hunters down there."

"We could join up, hopefully make it out of town," Alyssa said quietly.

"There's nothing out there," Alixa said, "We'd run out of supplies."

2/8/2011 #218

Alyssa frowned. "Then we'll need another way out. Maybe a helicopter."

She thought of the one she shot down earlier.

A fire team of mercenaries had landed near the outskirts of the city, having been sent to terminate the ex-Sentinel called Andrea Kovic. In the meantime, they were free to do anything to reach that goal, and if it meant killing obstructions, then so be it.

The chopper that brought them there rose into the air, and flew off into the distance, likely going to get other troops.

The team advanced cautiously, silently. The lead member stopped, spotting someone in the distance.

The others took cover in adjacent buildings as the leader shouted a warning.

"Stop where you are!"

Kastyn stopped and turned toward the voice. "What do you want?" she asked irritably, but cautiously. She rested her hand on her gun, in case she needed it.

"Drop your weapon," The soldier said bluntly. Unknown to him and his team, saying this was likely not a good idea.

As her hand rested on the gun, the leader started aiming through the sights. He said something the ninja couldn't hear, to one of his men. He was preparing to fire.

Alixa nodded.

"A helicopter would work," she said, "But I think prey gets to leave the city if they kill all the hunters. Might be worth a try."

"Any ideas?" Alyssa said to the girl.

"What's the matter, Bane?" Andrea's voice took a playful tone. "You thinking about running now? You still can, after all..."

Bane turned to the girl --May, she had called herself, hunter of hunters. He spoke quietly, through the balaclava that shielded his face.

"How about it? Can you keep her in this area until reinforcements arrive?"

"Shouldn't be a problem," May said.

She crossed the street rapidly, jumped up onto a blue mailbox, then onto an overhang, followed by the roof of a house. She moved in a siral-like pattern, going perpendicular to the gunshot's source, yet moving inward toward them. She kept her left side toward the source, in case she needed to block shells with her left arm.

Alixa thought for a moment.

"I still haven't seen any hunters besides the one from earlier, Sarin, I think she called herself. But there are others. We'll need to take them all out to escape the city. Helecopters wouldn't stay here, and if they did, it's because they crashed and no longer work."

2/19/2011 #225

"Or because they're here to hunt something-- someone, rather-- and set up a base," Alyssa corrected. She knew what was happening.

"I know some of them; there's one faction here that's on our side, the Lone Wolves. They're here for a hunter; at least I assume she would be a hunter." Alyssa holstered her weapon.

The girl was closing in on her position. This was no ordinary girl, either.

She was moving in a way that would make it rather difficult for Andrea to shoot her. That enough would be interesting, but there was also the fact that the girl seemed to be favoring her left arm.

Andrea compacted the railgun rifle. With the flick of a switch, the weapon began to shift components both inside and outside, compressing itself into the appearance of a small box.

She stuffed said object in her backpack, shouldered that, then drew two modular swords. They hadn't been activated, so at the moment they only consisted of their hilts.

Andrea waited.

Once Andrea came into view, May could see her put up the railgun. She altered her path to approach at a sharper angle, still in a spiral, but moving inward much more quickly. She threw a cross-shape of multiple shuriken, a set of five parallel to the ground with her left hand, and a set of five perpendicular to the ground with her right hand.

"Sorry, but what's your name?" Alixa said, "I'm Alixa."

Kastyn saw the man preparing to fire. She didn't know why this random guy was trying to kill her, but she wasn't going to give him a chance to shoot. She dodged to the left, slipping out her gun and snapping off a shot to his head.

2/19/2011 #228

"Alyssa Winters," the aforementioned person replied. She gestured to indicate her friend. "And that's Aion."

The girl was definitely not ordinary, as Andrea could see.

Currently, there were about ten shuriken flying toward her, in a cross-like pattern. She should do something about that, she figured.

Andrea activated the mod-swords and deactivated the active camouflage, while she ducked under the bottom-left corner of the cross. The blades had formed about halfway by then, with blue sparks riding the tip as they came toward completion.

She closed the already short distance between them, with one fully-formed mod-sword guarding her left side and the other, also complete, in a swing aimed for her lower abdomen.

If it was successful, it would either cut the girl in half or spill her innards all over the pavement.

The girl looked young, too. Such a shame.

The bullet luckily clipped the left side of his helmet and knocked it off.

The man shouted an order to his team and opened fire, launching three-round bursts of bullets toward his target.

Another man, the SAW carrier, found a window through which he could fire in the building he'd taken cover in. He also fired, with the weapon on full auto. It would send a heavy salvo toward the woman, which would leave her with a choice to make: Take cover, run, or die on the spot.

The first was what was intended to happen. If she took cover, the fire team would pin her down while a soldier or two would maneuver to kill her. Preferably the demo-man with explosive weaponry, or the sniper. They would pick once the target made a move.

2/19/2011 #229

Danté let them talk without any interuption from himself. He might as well be quiet, since he didn't have much to say at the moment. Nice to know that there were more prey out there...

Bleeding Perfection

"Cat got your tounge, Danté?" Alixa said, turning to him, "Introduce yourself."

As May neared her target, she extended the thin, curved blade in her elbow, then jumped into the air to drive it downward into the path of the hunter's sword. She pulled a kunai with her right hand, and drove that for her foe's head.

2/22/2011 . Edited 2/22/2011 #231

The girl had blocked Andrea's lead sword with... a hidden blade in her left arm? (

No, it was from the center of the elbow. That arm had to be prosthetic.

The girl pulled a kunai with her right hand and drove it for Andrea's head, who responded with the other sword. She raised it between her and the ninja, not to block the girl's attack, but to dissuade it.

If the ninja followed through, not only would the helmet protect Andrea's head; the girl's momentary exposure would cost her the arm.

But if the girl backed off, Andrea would do the same, at least for a moment.

Alyssa turned to look at the one Alixa had indicated. She held a pleasant, attentive expression, as if to welcome a friend.

Aion turned his gaze to the silent one. "Have any ideas?" He asked. "By the way I'm Aion."

2/22/2011 #233

Alyssa waited for Danté to speak.

Sarin paused for a second. Something reached her ears. She moved quickly, cursing when her hat caught on a fragment of wood, leaving her face fully exposed, the scars visible. She called softly to Shahdo. "Do you hear that? It's almost as if there are helicopters entering the city."

Aion said, "We should start walking. We shouldn't even have stood still this long." He flicked his eyes around. "We should be right near the exit by the drug store on Forcet Street. "

2/23/2011 #235

Alyssa agreed. "He's right; we've got to move."

She mentally kicked herself for failing to think as he did.

Aion made a quick mental scan of the people around him. He spoke slowly:

"I have knowledge of the City's underground ground tunnels. Every door has sensors on it, crystals that respond to different movement and the way a person walks. The crystals can show who is on the other side of the door, to those traveling the tunnels," he said. "or, for people who have crystal banks," he pulled out a black box with minature slits in it. "it can show use who may be approaching on the tracks."

He broke off analyzing Alyssa first. "Alyssa can aid our group using long range or short range attacks, using shrapnel or grenades. But she can also use short range attacks, possibly with swords. She's also quick and agile."

His eyes swept to Alixa, "She has a temper," he said putting a teasing tone in his voice. "But this can serve has a way to goat or enemies and snare them in a trap. Despite her temper, she's quick witted and can use long range and short range attacks, swords and bullets. Her slight build can get her almost anywhere in terms of tight spaces or terrain advantage."

He pointed at himself. "I'm mostly physical attacks, martial arts, with minimal blade throwing techniques, but I can disarm and do some damage using knowledge of breaking points and also partial paralysis. I have only minimal knowledge of my pistol. But I'm also the kind that like to goad and use mental mind games. I could be the bait for a fight."

His eyes glanced at Dante. "And you," he said. "I'm not too sure, but you also seem to have a gun of some sort, so you must be pretty proficient with it," he paused. "That leaves us with a Bait-Close Range fighter, two possible sniper and long distance attackers, that can hone in on a Hunter with quick close-quarter attacks, and....an unknown."

He waited, hoping he wasn't too off the mark. These were just base analysis, made from minute observation and analysis of weaponry, stance, and attire.

2/24/2011 #237

Kastyn cursed as her bullet knocked off the man's helmet, leaving him unharmed. She was about to fire again, when he gave an order to some unseen teammates. She suddenly launched into a high backflip an instant before the shots were fired, hopefully throwing the gunmen off guard for a split second. The instant her feet touched the ground, she spun and ducked behind a house, keeping her back to the brick wall, eyes darting back and forth, alert for any movement.

2/24/2011 #238
Bleeding Perfection

May couldn't stop her path through the air, or at least not easily. She pivoted the hunter's left-hand blade to the side with her mechanical arm while reaching to her right to catch the other blade with her hand. Once she had landed, she jumped backward, moving into a defensive posture that protected her torso. The mask would keep things from hitting her face, so she didn't need to protect that, and her legs could jump over anything swung for them.

Shahdo nodded, "It seems so," he said, "Care to take a look?"

Alixa agreed with Aion.

"Let's get going," she said, turning down the tunnel.

2/24/2011 . Edited by Fleur-de-lis Evans, 2/24/2011 #239

Alyssa had smirked at the tease, but said nothing. She followed Alixa's lead, but stopped when a tremor shook through the path they were taking. She recognized it immediately.

"That was a building, being demolished," she said in disbelief.

There was about three dozen or so helicopters in the air, many in combat with others. A few bore the image of a wolf on their side, near the cockpit.

Missiles streamed through the air in a crisscross of thick, gray smoke, some of them hitting nearby buildings. One such building, a fifteen-story abandoned office, crumbled under the assault and collapsed. The ground shook with the impact, and a cloud of heavy gray dust floated through the air, shielding the several streets from sight. It was visible for miles.

The ninja had gone behind a building.

The leader picked his team's demo-man, ordering him to fire at the corner of the building. If she was there, it would shower her with blocks of brick the size of cereal boxes.

That is, if the shrapnel didn't shred her first.

The demo-man hefted a grenade launcher, with a revolver-type load of eight shots. He sent two of those into the corner of the building.

Andrea stood and looked at the ninja before her. She was in a ready stance, poised to jump.

She chuckled. "You're with Bane? I didn't think he could hire ninjas."

She suddenly heard the tell-tale chop of a helicopter's rotor, actually several rotors, and she dropped the chuckle quickly to pay attention.
