Who Is This Girl Anyway

England has been renamed after the dictator Samson Steel, and is currently a totalitarian state with a strict class system. You are controlled by the state from cradle to grave- you speak, act and marry as you are told. Sex is viewed as being for procreation only, and there is rarely passion or affection in a marriage. The dictatorship has been going for about five years now after the election of the Party.

Lily sat down quietly in the first pew, smoothing out her government issue wedding dress. She wondered what he- whoever he was- would be like. She'd daydreamed about it a bit as a teenager, but she knew now that she had no choice in the matter. Hearing footsteps, she took her cue to stand and walk to the Party-appointed minister, looking out through her veil.

Mahal stood there quietly. He wasn't sure how he felt about this, not that he had a choice.

Lily listened to the peppy, overenthusiastic voice of the minister and nodded from time to time to show she was listening. Agreeing to her vows, she glanced sideways at the man beside her, but the veil obscured her views. She hoped he was decent looking since she had to sleep with him.

Mahal stared back at her, though he didn't quite think anything like that. He didn't really care what she looked like and wondered more about how their life would be like.

The minister shut his notebook with a thud, and the wedding was finished. Lifting her veil, Lily took a good look at the man in front of her and kissed him briskly on the lips- no one expected passion. So then, she thought as they walked out to the car, you're the one I'm spending my life with now. Hello.

9/23/2011 #5

"......." He stepped in with her. ".....What's your name....?"

"Lily." She didn't say her surname as she didn't yet know what her married name was. "What about you?"

9/23/2011 #7

"Mahal Miller." He stared out the window.

Mahal Miller. So that made her Lily Miller, then. She glanced out her window to see them approaching their new home, where family would be waiting with sandwiches and alcohol. Nothing big. Just a small celebration that they might get grandchildren, and that the Millers' son would have some time away from training for the honeymoon period. The phrase was archaic now, no one honeymooned anymore, but that wasn't te point. Once the car halted, she bunched her skirts up in her hands to step out of the car, then walked to the door.

Mahal followed silently.

Their parents waited in the beige living room. Lily walked over to hug her parents, and nodded curtly to her new mother and father-in-law.

9/23/2011 #11

They nodded back, not really caring.

Two hours of awkwardness ensued. Lily and hr parents stayed together; the Millers stayed with their son. No one said much. It was a relief when it was time for them to go home, so much so that- for a few minutes at least- Lily didn't even panic about the wedding night or the beginning of life with this stranger.

9/23/2011 #13

Mahal sighed. It would be tiresome. Awkwardness, he could handle fine.

Hearing him sigh, Lily turned around. She glanced at the clock. Eight. Perfect. Setting her veil down on the table, she tried to think of something to say, before settling for silence.

9/23/2011 #15

"..." He didn't say anything either.

(Oh. I suppose we should address this now. How are we going to deal with the...*ahem* "breeding process"? It sounds like it could be a good place to put in dialouge for communication, but....yeah.)

"Do you want a drink?" she offered. Might as well try and get off on the right foot.

(Probably extremely awkwardly, although I think I may have an idea. Shall we talk about it in the chat?)

9/23/2011 #17

"Ah...I don't really drink alcohol." He scratched his head. "You can though."

(Sure. Or PM if the content of the talk is gonna be awkward. :P)

(Dare say it might be. :P)

"Tea?" she tried again. They were stuck together now- she was hoping they could maybe be friends.

9/23/2011 #19

(:P Okay. PM it is.)

"Ah...alright..." He nodded. She was acting pretty strangely.

She stood up and walked robotically to the kitchen. Listening to the water boil, she stared out the window and sighed. So this was her lot.

"Do you take sugar?" she called.

9/23/2011 #21

He nodded. "Thank you."

She offered the steaming cup out to him.

"Mind out you don't spill any,"

9/23/2011 #23

He nodded. "Yes..."

Head down, she walked over to the table and folded the veil up. She'd have a month to keep it and wash it, then it went back to the state for someone else to use. Unsure of what to say, she hummed to herself quietly to ease the silence.

9/23/2011 #25

"....What's that song....?" He asked randomly.

She looked up, placing the folded veil over the back of the chair.

"It's, um... Vera Lynn, We'll Meet Again,"

9/23/2011 #27

"Hmm....It sounded familiar...I don't remember song names though."

9/23/2011 #28

"Hmm," She stood still, trying to think of what to say to him.

9/23/2011 #29

"....Shall we...start?"
