Have you ridden in a plane recently? This is what happens: random members of the public from all ages, races and genders file inside a giant metal tube. They sit down and are told some preliminary safety instructions nobody pays attention to. Then that metal tube shoots into the air and floats across the country, suspended between earth and space, no struts, no strings, no legs. Inside, everybody eats peanuts and drinks various liquids out of tiny plastic cups, like it’s perfectly normal for something heavier than air to leap into the sky and stay there.
Normal doesn't mean boring. Normal can be pretty wild; we've just lost the ability to appreciate it. Sometimes what we need is an extra spark of the fantastical to reveal the hidden delights of the things we take for granted.
My goal for my writing is to reveal the truth that's hidden under grimy routine or over-familiarity.
And I love to talk about how we tell truth in stories, what's effective, what's not, better methods--all of it! So I welcome comments and critiques!
