I live in a madcap world of my own design, because the everyday life of a college undergrad-let's face it - really isn't anything to write home about. In my head, a really good story - a story of quality - happens when the story writes itself. It happens when the characters take on their own lives, own personalities, and the pen is simply a conduit, not a creator.
