Excerpt from The Known World concerning the entity known as "Unbeknownst":

Unbeknownst first began making appearances under the handles "forceofhobbit" and "jenniemarie" on LJ in 2003. The first recorded sighting is December 3, 2003; sightings had been reported, prior to that, but always unverifiable, usually brief appearances in chatrooms or on message boards. Her first words, spoken, were apparently: "Well, what do we have here?"

Rarely photographed, a description was of her was pieced together from recollections an ex-boyfriend had, following their breakup:

She was tall, or taller than me, and she used to wear these giant black stompy boots. The boots were probably the defining feature. There was a pair of black and silver Skullcandy headphones she'd wear sometimes, when she rode the train, and she had a black button-up coat. her hair was brown, and longer—I think; it was long enough to braid, anyway. Her eyes were brown. She had long eyelashes. Her nose had a bump in it.

I'm sorry I can't remember more; it's been a long time since I've seen her.

Sources indicate that, starting on December 27th, 2008, following the arrival of a mysterious box post-marked "Oregon", Unbeknownst switched out her Skullcandy headphones for a pair of Sennheiser 280s. When asked where she had acquired them, she merely smiled and said, "My best friend cares about me rather a lot."

Little else is known about the personal life of Unbeknownst. School records indicate that she briefly attended Ohio State, a participant in their Freshman Engineering Honors program, before transferring to the University of Utah and seeking a degree in chemistry. Her academic record is unremarkable.

There is some indication that she was fond of The Lord of the Rings, but the only evidence to support this conclusion is her username, and some mediocre fan-fiction which is only tenuously connected to her at best.

Some facts about Unbeknownst (unverified at the time of this publication):

-Answers to the name of "Jenn" and indeed has been known to prefer people to refer to her as that, versus "Unbeknownst".

-Cannot be looked upon directly. An accidental glance results in slight confusion; intentional staring causes temporary blindness. One unfortunate observer declared, after having been treated for such blindness, that it was like "staring into the sun—looking into the heart of the light, the silence." He declined to comment further, saying, "No words could do it justice."

-Is a pacifist. When asked why, supposedly she gave a dazzling smile and said, "I don't want to hurt anyone else."

-Is an atheist. This directly contradicts some reports that she is a god, of sorts, but does make sense when it is considered that she has reported on multiple occasions that she does not believe in herself.

-Curiously, it is reported that she was not born so much as arrived. One moment there was empty space, and the next, "Jenn" was standing with her hands in her pockets, going, "Well, what have we here?"

-Does not use her headphones to listen to music. Instead, she shelters the rest of the world from what is in her head. By placing the headphones over her ears, the stray sounds cannot escape from her head.

-Is, by all counts, an excellent cook. The verity of this statement has yet to be established as those that have sampled her cooking are, by nature, wary to talk of it.

-Never dances. Reports vary as to why this is; some say it is because she is terrible at dancing. Others report that it is because she is too uptight to dance. Still others claim it is because if she danced, the world as we know it would end.

-Is responsible for the decimation of a small Indonesian village sometime around the turn of the 19th century.

-Is fairly active on livejournal as kickthehobbit; journalfen as wankaholic. This is speculative, of course, though similar icons on all accounts elevate this to "true rumor" status, and it is this author's belief that all three are one and the same.

-Has never been known to get angry. To anger her, it is feared, would cause the breakdown of the fabric of reality. It was attempted once, in 2004. The cause of her wrath was subsequently never seen again.

The list continues, each claim growing more fantastic the further one reads on. Little is really known about the strange girl known as Unbeknownst. What is known for certain?
