Hey all. I'm Bob Evans. The last of the Fiction Press Ancients.
Once upon a time, I was a high school student with a bunch of friends on this website. We wrote some stories, shared some laughs, and had some adventures.
That was a long time ago.
Since then, I've been a busy fellow. I've toyed both with old story franchises and worked on newer material. I tend to write in the vein of epic worlds, grandiose conflict, magic systems, space operas, connected universes, and heroic characters fighting for a cause. A few authors I take notes from include Brandon Sanderson, Orson Scott Card, James S.A. Corey, Eric Nylund, Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, and recently Karen Traviss. Speculative fiction is the name of the game, though I like blurring the line between sci-fi and fantasy, so hopefully I've got a little something for everyone to enjoy.
I'm a big believer in the concept of constructive criticism and useful reviews. You'll notice I've posted a few essays on the subject. I prefer to work within the subject material and genres that play to my strengths, but on occasion I'll delve into other material if you ask nicely. I like to pick apart why a subject holds my attention, the efficiency of prose conveying a story in the written medium, and playing to the best tropes of your genre.
To throw out some personal trivia: I currently reside in the Old West that is New Mexico. I'm a bit of a road warrior that travels the land (I can't call any one place my "home town"). And I dabble in photography (I'm on Deviant Art at delta406(dot)deviantart(dot)com). I dabble a LOT in photography.
Between my high school days and present enterprises, I've experimented and played with a lot of different projects. This is a haphazard attempt to give you a road map through it all.
Includes projects 40,000 words and longer.
The Epochal Chronicles (I - III) – A sequel series to The Seminary Gang, set a century later and following descendant characters. Introduced via short story Raquel in Cadence.
Jackson Gray: Vengeance Bounty — Space opera adventure story about bounty hunters, villain master minds, and a galactic cold war about to turn hot.
The Infection — Traditional post-apocalyptic zombie story. A collaboration novel between an old high school friend and me way back in the day.
Forest Frenzy — A fun idea I got one summer working in the mountains. Teens out camping have their summer turned upside down when paramilitary soldiers descend on a supposed UFO crash site.
The Seminary Gang (I - IV) — A four novel adventure series created by my friends and I as our magnum opus in high school. A tale of teen adventure, time travel, global conquest, world hopping, and gods.
Extinction — My first full-length novel published on Fiction Press during high school: a special forces team explores a biological laboratory where things have gone horribly wrong.
A variety of short stories, one-shots, half-completed ideas, and snippets from my various creative writing enterprises. A few of the lengthier ones include:
One With Premise — A collection of super short stories born out of prompt writing challenges.
Privileges — A young woman finds herself the subject of unwanted attention from a weirdo angel.
Taken in Wrath — Set out in the multiverse where powerful beings tango over godhood.
Shadows of the Second Time War — An anthology of short stories set in the Epochal/TSG universe. These were a lot of fun for the sake of building up a grander mythos.
Raquel in Cadence — An introductory short story building up the lore and background of The Epochal Chronicles.
Six-One-Four/Fabian’s War — A side character (Jade) in my Ben and Kyyra series; she's a black ops agent running missions against the supernatural.
Initiative 8 — My take on the spy genre, with young agents combating domestic terrorism.
And a quick shout-out to my readers. It always warms my heart as a writer to see the various hit statistics on each of my stories. You guys rock and are the reason I share my writing. Thank you for taking the time that you do.
