"Street howitzer" is 1800s-era slang for a shotgun. A howitzer is an older-style cannon, of the type typically used in the Civil War: the slender-barreled, smaller cannon typically mounted on gigantic wheels that you've probably seen in old war movies. In modern parlance, then, it's equivalent to calling a weapon a hand-cannon.

Primarily, I write historical fiction with a gay bent (at least, that's the stuff I'm comfortable with posting on the Internet). My current obsessions are with the residents of Tombstone, AZ, and Elizabethan London. Yes, I will be writing famous Western heroes and British playwrights as being either gay or bisexual. Yes, I know that they really weren't. No, I don't care what you think of my depravity.
