Hiyaah! I don't really know if personal info is necessary, but I know that when I check out profiles, I enjoy getting to know the writter a tad, so yeah. My name's Joëlle and I'm from Quebec. I'm a girl and am currently 15. I love to write, read, sing, cook and play music (in no particular order). I don't hate school (in fact, I must confess, I'm sort of a dork) and...well, that's enough for now.

My favorites! :)

- Favorite song: I'll be by Edwin McCain.

- Favorite movie: The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton.

- Favorite books : L'empire des anges by Bernard Werber.

- Favorite writers: Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, Ken Follet, Philip Pullman, Bernard Werber, India Desjardins, Stephen King, J.K. Rowling...and many more.

Visual Novels

What is this?

Have you ever heard of visual novels? Perhaps not. These are most popular in Japan, but less in other countries. Basically, visual novels are stories you can read on the computer in which the reader becomes the main character. They are displayed with pictures (backgrounds and characters with several expressions), sounds and music. What is most special about them is that many of them offer choices to the reader, or if you prefer, are stories in which you are the hero (visual or kinetic novel (read below)). What is cool with them is that pratically all of the time, the genre of the story is romance. Nevertheless, not many visual novels have been created in English (or translated from Japaneese), and it is possible to get conned with low quality visual novels or hidden computer viruses. This is why I decided to share these with top 7 favorite and safe visual novels.

What is the difference between a visual and a kinetic novel?

Visual novels give choices to the reader; sometimes, they can choose the name of the main character of the story; and they can make choices that will change the fate of the main character. Usually, those stories have different endings (most of the time 3-4, I think); some are bad endings, and others are good ones.

Kinetic novels are just like visual novels, except that the reader can not change the fate of the main character, and there is only one possible ending.

May I play a visual novel even if the main character is a male and I'm a female (or the other way around)?

Of course you may! Tsk, silly... (I will still mention it for you, if you like)

Is it safe?

Yes, it is mostly safe to download...well, I'm retty sure. I've downloaded them all and have encountered no problems.

Is it free?

Not all visual novels are free, but the ones I am sharing with you are.

Can I make my own visual novel?

YES! Yes, of course. If you like writing, it is probable you would enjoy creating a visual novel. Personally, I think the ren'py engine is the best program for beginners who wish to create a visual novel. You needn't have any programming skills whatsoever. You also don't need to know how to draw, although it would turn to your advantage. All you need to make a visual novel is: imagination, perseverance, creativity, a computer and TIME. Yes, it takes a lot of time and efforts, but I think the result is worth it.

Here is the link to download ren'py: The site may answer all of your questions, and, to make it easier, you may use the tutorial once having downloaded the program. I myself am currently working on a visual if you want some tips, you can message me anytime! :)

Disclaimer: I do not own any of these visual novels, nor the program.

Here are, as mentioned afore, 7 of my favorite visual novels. Be aware that all ratings and playtime approximations have been made by me, so they might not be accurate. Also, do not forget that my favorite visual novel might not be yours, so don't complain if you don't enjoy! Finally, do not panic if the playtime is too long; you can save your progress at any time and come back later to keep on reading where you left. Isn't it cool?

On with the visual novels...

1. Go! Magical Boy

Genre: Humor/Fantasy/Romance

Rating: K+

Playtime: Around 70 minutes

Type of novel: Visual novel

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: Life would be pretty nice if it wasn't for the fact that you seem to be the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time. You just moved, have made no friends yet, are late for diner, and are about to bump into the scariest situation you could have imagined. On top of that, a strange woman picks you up and burdens you with an impossible task. And man, now you're REALLY late for dinner. Did I menion the girls? No? Well, there's even more trouble ahead.

My appreciation: A very original and funny story. The narrator is so bizarre and entertaining and I think this visual novel really comes out of the ordinary. If you've got time and a good sense of humor, I strongly recommend trying this one out!

2. Songs of Araiah

Genre: Fantasy/Romance

Rating: T

Playtime: Very long—about two hours or so?

Type of novel: Kinetic novel

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: Jason runs away from his home in search of an elusive mansion beyond the forest at the base of a mountain. He seeks its sole resident, a lady believed able to grant any wish. However, she isn't one to deal out favors for free. Is Jason willing to pay the price, even if it's eternal servitude? And what secrets and histories does the mysterious lady possess?

My appreciation: This is probably the longest visual novel I proposed, but I think playing the game that long is quite worth it. Usually, people either hate or love this story, and I by all means loved it. It's a very funny and cute story.

3. A Dream of Summer

Genre: Drama/Romance

Rating: K+

Playtime: Can't tell you for now...maybe around 40-50 minutes

Type of novel: Visual novel

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: Toshiki, the realist.
Mizuna, the girl he met on the roof.
And BROY, the school band whose members surround them.

It's the summer of their third year, and Toshiki must face not only the school festival, but also a promise that he may never be able to fulfil.

My appreciation: Sort of a sad story...the ending is very predictable, but it's a sweet story anyway!

4. Daemonophilia

Genre: Humor/Fantasy/Romance

Rating: M

Playtime: 70-80 minutes

Type of novel: Visual novel

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: Even though he's in mid-twenties, Franklin has never had a real girlfriend, and with a lousy job in a second-hand bookstore, he doesn't have many chances of finding one. However, some books hold secrets Franklin never thought of, and all of the sudden, his sex life becomes much more interesting—and much more dangerous: what if losing your virginity also meant losing your soul?

My appreciation: Really funny. Rated M for the theme although there is absolutely no explicit content. It's an interesting, hilarious and original story that I've enojyed playing more than once.

5. Moonlight Walks

Genre: Drama/Fantasy/Romance

Rating: K

Playtime: 15-20 minutes

Type of novel: Visual novel

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: It's the summer before you go away to college, and you're spending it visiting with your aunt and uncle on a small island in the Atlantic ocean. One night, while out taking pictures of the full moon, you meet a girl walking down the beach...

My appreciation: This is sort of a classical in the visual novels. Although it is short, it is an intriguing story fun to play.

6. Heiress II

Genre: Drama/Romance

Rating: T

Playtime: 15-20 minutes

Type of novel: Visual novel

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: Finding himself at a gala charity evening on a luxury airship, Mikhail is part of a "date auction". Surprisingly, the highest bidder for him is the richest woman on board, Cen Isyanina.

My appreciation: A deeply touching story that really marked me and, no matter the circumstances, this story takes a quite unexpected turn at the beginning...

7. Senior Year

Genre: Romance

Rating: T

Playtime: (Not sure) 30-40 minutes

Type of novel: Simulation

Gender of the main character: Male

Summary: This is more a game than a story. The point is just to match a college boy (main character) with one of the many girls available in the game.

My appreciation: I did not adore this game, but I figured some of you might. It is entertaining, but there's no story much, it's more of a game than anything.

And that's about it! This took me a really long time to write, so if you actually read this, or even better tried these visual novels, please share it with me! I so totally love visual novels, and I'm trying to spread it around so don't hesitate to give me some feedback and share the ones you like with your friends!

Wow, I don't know if people come on this page you may have noticed, it's been a while...but I'M BACK! :D Yay!

I really don't like the only two stories I posted approximately a year ago (and I like to think I've improved my writing since), and so have removed them. I think you really should check out my new story, since I've spent so much time on it and I really mean to finish it!

Rock on! :)
