I have come across MANY summaries that offer this warning: Yaoi, Shonen-ai, MxM, Slash, which makes me wonder if they even know the difference between these things, because there is a huge difference. Slash (or MxM, whichever you prefer) refers to homosexual content in fictions featuring real people (or characters from books, TV shows, music industry, or characters from their original fiction). Yaoi & shonen-ai refer to fictions featuring characters from anime/manga/Japanese video games. And there is this difference between yaoi and shonen-ai, because yaoi is a hard version and shonen-ai a soft one, of homosexual interactions in anime/manga/Japanese video games, or fanfiction.
