Meet The Author (In-The-Making) Hullo! I’m Casper, your average ordinary eighteen-year-old sophomore college girl majoring in Linguistics and Literature. I live in the Philippines with my dad, my brother, and Panic (Bear)—a dog who looks awfully like a bear. I enjoy reading and writing during my spare time, as well as listening to rock music and watching foreign movies (I especially love French films!). When I want to be alone, I hang out at coffee shops and do some browsing at local bookstores. Below are just some of my favorite things from where I draw my inspiration. I’m listing them mostly for the love of books, film, and music. Favorite Books and Authors: A lot of Jane Austen, but especially Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey, and Sense and Sensibility. In case you haven’t guessed yet, Miss Austen is my favorite classic literature author. Some of the books I had to read for school (but enjoyed anyway) are Homer’s The Odyssey, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Pearl Buck’s The Good Earth, Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince, William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, and Haruki Murakami’s After Dark. For some more serious light reading: Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude and Memories of My Melancholy Whores. And for reading for the sake of reading: J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series, Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, (the inevitable) Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, Jenny Carroll’s (none other than Meg Cabot incognito) The Mediator Series, Ransom Rigg’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, John Berendt’s Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil. PS: It helps if you have an electronic reader! Favorite Films: Some of the best foreign films I’ve seen are Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, Jeux d’Enfant, Melissa P., Persepolis, The Science of Sleep, The Diary of A Nymphomaniac, and Pan’s Labyrinth. I watch sappy indie-style films like Flipped, Youth In Revolt, and Scott Pilgrim VS The World. Along with the obvious romantic comedies of the Golden Age of Hollywood romantic comedy era: Sleepless In Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, and Mannequin (Thumbs up if you’ve read my story “The Vivification”!). Favorite Songs and Musicians: I’m very much into rock music, though not necessarily a fan of the throat cancer-inducing shouting. I like to listen to Coldplay, The Black Keys, Angus and Julia Stone, Beck and Bat for Lashes, The Belle Brigade, Black Rebel Motorcycle, Blue Foundation, The Bravery, Bush, Cage the Elephant, Foster The People’s Pumped Up Kicks and Helena Beat, Florence + The Machine, Foo Fighters, Theophilus London, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sea Wolf, Thom Yorke, OK Go, The Features, Collective Soul, and Eastern Conference Champions. I also listen to the feel-good songs of She and Him. About My Writing When I attended a seminar on creative nonfiction in my senior year in high school, the guest speaker (a local published poet) advised budding writers to write about what they know—and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing these past three years. I mostly write cheesy romance stories (because I’m a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic), but I’m doing my best not to limit myself to the genre. I add little bits of literature-based allegories and historical and mythological spin-offs, because it’s what I do best. I’m trying to come up with a road bump-proof plotline for a multi-chapter story here on FictionPress, but for now, I’m just biding my time with a series of unrelated one-shots and exercising my imagination for something bigger in the future. Please don’t hesitate to message me! I swear I get this bubbly giddy feeling when I get them. I am fluent in English, Filipino, and Cebuano. Go easy on me if you decide to message me in Mandarin and Fukien, because I have always taken my 10 years’ worth of Chinese lessons for granted. And go really really easy on me if you choose to message me in French, because I have only taken it up for three semesters. Cheers!
