About People and Writing

"Everybody is identical in their secret unspoken belief that way deep down they are different from everyone else."
― David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest

"That's why most writing now, if you read it they go on one two three four and tell you what happened like newspaper accounts, no adjectives, no long sentences, no tricks they pretend, and they finally believe that they really believe that the way they saw it is the way it is ... it never takes your breath away, telling you things you already know, laying everything out flat, as though the terms and the time, and the nature and the movement of everything were secrets of the same magnitude. They write for people who read with the surface of their minds, people with reading habits that make the smallest demands on them, people brought up reading for facts, who know what's going to come next and want to know what's coming next, and get angry at surprises. Clarity's essential, and detail, no fake mysticism, the facts are bad enough."
— William Gaddis, The Recognitions

"Why should things be easy to understand?" — Thomas Pynchon

My Work

(Old) Though being stylistically and tonally different, Lovers and Madmen and The Lean and Hungry Look possess a shared universe with character crossover. The events of Lean occur mostly in October 2015 while those in Lovers happen in July 2016. Lovers and Madmen is currently SHELVED.

(August 2018) Subtle and Quick to Anger, as the name implies, is going to be a collection of fantasy short stories about wizards. The pieces are based primarily on the writings of Jack Vance, H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, Lord Dunsany, a splash of Victorian fiction, and several historical scientific works. I'm going for an older, more narrative style which I prefer in fantasy tales.

Sunflower Girl by Whirlymerle reviews
Her mother had advised her to catch a cab and not to worry about the cost, because Lanie's a Wall Street Professional now and should look and act the part. Then her mother told her to stay safe and avoid getting into cars whose drivers look like they could be kidnappers, murderers, rapists, or racists, who presumably also look and act the part. She takes the bus. Reviews returned.

In Atom's Orbit reviews
Antique short stories of arcana, gallant desire, and Lovecraftian horror.—Wizards! They are not cheap conjurors, nor are they seers, soothsayers, or crude elementalists, or even the dread necromancers, feared by all. Their "magics" are quaint. But wizards... wizards wander starfields and dreamlands, and at whim forge heroes and kings, because they know the names of nameless things.
