Todd, a teenage boy, has always been empathetic. Of late, his empathy seems to be getting out of control. The pain and suffering of a young girl becomes too much for him to bear. And the way he gets rid of that pain creates a hunger that sends his world spiraling.

The next day is the worst. Truly, there's an insatiable appetite when I first grab my miniature spear, and saddle my automated horse. It's a high like no other (well, there's one other comparable high which I shall tell you soon enough). But now, the very thought of carving open a bumpkin like Sherman brings me great pain.

Amy finds herself imprisoned by a sadistic "farmer." She begins to lose all hope. But a visit from a young boy who claims to be lost turns the tide.

The meeting with the other students who can supposedly see Sam's hallucination remains foggy. Later that same night, Sam finds himself walking to the school's gym, unable to intellectualize his motivation. From there, he meets what seems to be a boy his age. Although the boy wears "monk attire" and calls himself Moonlight.

Samuel learns he isn't alone.
