A. Poetry vs. All Else
Poetry is dying.
People in desperation to try to revive the art of poetry by slamming are just digging the grave faster. To prevent poetry from hitting the tomb is to give it its much-needed respect. Not by doing hip hop lyrics about thugs, N-word usage, girls, sex, drugs, crime, melodrama, blah, blah, and more blah. All that is a blatant disgrace to the art form that poetry was.
Regardless if slammers think that they're raising the poetry form out of the ditch, I think they're making people want to shun it more. They are against 'page poetry.' (Page poetry is the good stuff, by the way. E.g. John Greenleaf Whittier, Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, etc.)
Another hindrance to the success of poetry I believe is genre fiction. That's SO popular that poetry goes under the radar of YA novels and fantasy series. The popular genres of fiction and other content override the potential of the aging form of poetry.
Society has lost its meaning as the Bible-fearing poets of the 16th - 19th century descended into the oblivion of obscurity. The few people that do still read the golden works know their place in the world.
So, I am guilty of riding the fan fiction/fantasy boat. I've obsessed die-hard-like over the ridiculous concept of 'shipping,' putting two characters from the criteria into a romantic relationship. Makes my escapist mind go gaga, but my logical mind says 'why in heck do I do this?'
I have browsed deviantArt endless hours for stupid malarkey that actually had no benefits in life. I just did it so I could save myself from experiencing life and its boredom. But life is actually worth living and no one can question that. Fantasy is just temporary. Life reaches on into heaven, if you have been saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. And heaven is eternal.
