"Are we always supposed to live like this? Is it always going to be this way?"

She looked at him, bored deep into his soul, desperate to find answers. He could not provide them. "I don't know," he responded, quietly. "I'm sorry, but I don't know." He tried to say more, but his chin quivered and his eyes burned, and he rushed to hide his face from her.

He blamed himself for the life she now lived. He blamed himself, and he couldn't take back what he'd done.

"Then what do we do?" She gently touched his cheek, brought his eyes to meet her gaze, and a line of worry creased her brow as she noticed his tears. He had to answer her, however; he had to give something.

"Probably something incredibly stupid," he told her with a pained, cough of a laugh. "I suppose we're just going to have to burn the world."

"F.L.I.G.H.T. was meant to be the reward."

Louer found it difficult to stare into that face, to believe those lies, but so much more he couldn't look into Doug's eyes and see the falsehood for what it was.

The man was telling the truth, or at the very least he believed the things he was spouting.

"The reward for what?" Louer asked, though he wasn't sure he wanted to continue this meeting. He feared the rising Nightmare, feared the unknown beasts which might not prey upon him if only the old man were silenced. He was, after all, the Third Sign. It only made sense to kill him.

"For the pain of humanity," Doug returned, his voice a wheezing whisper. The wrinkled waves which riddled his features seemed to frown in simultaneous motion, as he did with the images his feeble mind surely conjured. "He said it was the reward for all of the things mankind has had to suffer to get to this point. It was their reward, and their punishment for their natures. He. . . . I - I didn't believe him at the time, but I should have shot him in the head the moment he'd suggested this place."

Louer, at that, could not respond. Yet, he needn't, for the elder pseudo-scientist continued on.

"You will have to kill me to proceed." Those words resonated within the great chamber of nothingness, the blackness seeming to amplify their volume rather than consume it. "Nobody has ever made it past the Third Door before, and I am the boss. I won't fight back."

Louer drew then, very slowly, considering every option. He'd worked for months for this chance, but there were so many questions he now felt pressed to ask. He couldn't, however, form the words. The longer he remained mute, the further from its sheath the blue-tinged blade emerged, until it stood between him and the Third Sign in as uncertain a stance as its master's.

"I don't understand," he tried, his voice seeming so very small.

"He's watching very closely," the old man worded carefully. "But it will take him time to enrage me. You have to drive that home before he does that."

"Just tell me what F.L.I.G.H.T. is, and who God is," Louer begged, his grip on the blade slack.

"You're out of time," the old man smiled, growling these words out as if in great strain.

THE MAD ONE! a great disembodied voice proclaimed throughout the chamber, and suddenly a brilliance ignited the place, as if a light had been switched on. The old man stood, his smile widening, his face nothing like it had been.

"Begin," he worded, and Louer knew his time had come to an end. This was everything he'd trained for, and as he brought the blade to bear and crouched defensively, he knew this fight would be one that he could not be proud of.

We are a simple collaboration of minds, a group dedicated to bringing a fantastic plethora of literary works to you! My name is Samuel D. Forogar, a reviewer of stories and writer of different ones, and a co-creator of this Collaboration. As the seeming narrator and doorman of this esteemed establishment, I welcome you, Reader, into our midst!

Each story below is something of a room unto itself, a world contrived of the minds and existences, respectively, of its Creators and denizens. Do mind the carpets run through our corridors, sir or madame or (insert et-cetera-term of respect here); we've just had them cleaned!

Now, if we might continue, please do follow me as I lead you into our realm. . . .

Each fabrication of imagination, great creations of the inspirations of our organization's recreation, stand minus limitations or imitations as implementations of conceptualizations bred by the abilities of our own minds. Know that many presentations await, so make your reservations and view our revelations to you, our congregation! After all, each story below represents a part of ourselves, a part we're revealing to you, Reader! And so, with that said, we are only too happy to receive valued feedback regarding anything you might read, and would gladly review anything of yours in reciprocation!

So, pick a door, any door, for in this world you will see many a door! Some may be locked, others may lead to someplace you fear, or dread, or find uncomfortable. Yet, others will lead you to happiness, or excitement, or worlds you may not even understand! I've entered many a room myself, with each of these feelings at heart, and I can assure you that I do not regret even one path I've taken, even one door I've opened!

And with that said, I implore you, Reader, to browse to your heart's content. I present to you, Reader, a Collaboration of Minds!

Our aim is, like many others on Fiction Press, to create and present compelling, powerful stories for our audience. As such, I extend my deepest thanks to all who read, and a very emphatic "Thank you!" to our reviewers.

In addition to uploading pieces of our own, ACoM members will be releasing special content that stands as the combined efforts of all, and this content will be unique to the Collaboration!

As I am your host, I need little introduction. Which is a good thing, because meeting new people can be startling!

Favored Genres:

Psychological, mysterious and fantastical, as expressed rather prominently in my works. I'm moderately into sci-fi, history and I especially adore pieces which break from the mold, with unique or surprising twists and happenings.

Special Titles:

Loneliness

A tale of a world which has "passed on," and the denizens still continuing to strive for survival against a clock soon to run out, this piece follows the life of a being called Elle Silver. "Ellie," as her memories remind her, is known as a Protomeckian, something that is not quite human but also not quite machine, divine but not Godly, something with unbelievable power but not omnipotence. Her life, however, and the years which have piled on, have left her in a weakened state, with nothing but her shattered memories and the comfort of her "Father" to help her survive. Once a warrior, a leader and the last salvation of humanity, Silver finds that, in lieu of all of that, she has nothing. Her Purpose is nonexistent, and her life is fading, and her loneliness is sinking in.

Yet, with the coming of another battle, and another sign of her Reclamation, she may yet again have Purpose.

I'm an engineer who loves science fiction, and I enjoy martial arts, weapons collecting, and brain research outside of writing.

Favored Genres:

Science fiction, sword-and-sorcery, history, pulp adventure, nonfiction, thrillers and fantasy. I prefer to see how a writer describes their setting and characters, as well as ensuring each main character has a unique narrative 'voice' to them. Strategy, adaptation, weaponry, and a lot of hard work!
